I have lived in Bakersfield for 22 years. It is not exactly "Beautiful" but this city has heart. I have said this before, this city takes care of its own. Fundraisers, donations, blood drives. The whole city comes together when one of the residences needs help. Bakersfield has a strong country background and is probably one of the most patriotic cities around. It has been voted "All -American City." There are lots of job opportunities, we are 2 1/2 hours to L.A. 2 hours to the beach, 4 1/2 hours to Vegas, and you can drive an hour and be at the snow. As for Meth problem. Yes, there are drugs here but not anymore than most cities. If you stay away from North Bakersfield (Oildale) you will avoid most of the meth issues. The East and South sides have the gang problems, but again none of this is any worse than any other city. The SouthWest and NorthWest are the best parts of town. There are some parts in the NorthEast that are nice. I have raised 3 boys and never had to worry about them and drugs. And I take extreme offense to what one poster said, ""Un-Educated Conservative Republicans" Does working hard for your money make a person un-educated? Bakersfield is an oilfield and construction town, and I can quarantee that most of the people who work in these feilds make more than someone with a college degree. Bakersfield does have alot of conservatives but to people, but to me conservative=family values. IMO.
Basically, if Bakersfield was in the Mountains it would be #1 but since it isn't it gets #2 |

Please....for me...go out to Bakersfield FIRST....just you and your husband.....and take a real good look at where and what your getting into....Don't let yourself be stone-walled by P.C. 'all we can tell you...'..B.S... Persist in getting the accurate information you need to make a SOUND decision. Look at the crime stats and demographic data presented on this very site.....and go from there....Get local papers....look at the police blotter....they can't lie about everything....check it out REAL close first....before you move....

Haha, this is funny!
As far as “culture/fancy restaurants” in Bakersfield go, here is what I think: I would rather eat at Red Lobster and have the waitress be happy, friendly, and enjoy her life than eat at The Ivy in Beverly Hills and have the waitress spit in my food because she is not a movie star. As a conservative republican with at BA from NYU, I love Bakersfield! It is my wonderful new home! Peace! |

Well, I ask because when I think of a dirty nasty armpit I think of my state, Indiana. Slush, icy snow and gloomy, dark, winters laced with nascar, jocks, and cornfields. You hate your state, I hate mine. Common ground

Apple Valley, Lancaster, or Bakersfield????
So there is a mining company in Boron, with a great position. If I take it I would need to live somewhere with a decent singles population (not necessarily a singles scene, just the population). So when I drew a 50min commute time circle around Boron, I came up with these 3 cities. Since I will be driving out to the middle of nowhere I assume I traffic will be a non issue and each mile will equal 1 min (at 60mph). So between AV, Lancaster, and Bakerfield where would you advice a 31 single male to live? I will rent for sure, so housing prices is a non-issue. Schools don't matter either since I have no kids. PLEASE ADVISE! |

I would go with Tehachapi, it's closer than bakersfield and is a nice place, I don't know about the singles thing but bakersfield would probably be best there but Tehachapi is close. Are you going to work for the mine or the co-gens? I work for the company who ownes and runs the co-gens at the mine. |
