I know someone asked about Santa Barbara, but are there places near L.A. where there are office jobs that one can live making about $30-35,000/yr.? Crime, any other input please. I'd be renting and apt. too, not buying anything.

You can live off 35K in the inland empire, for that, though you'll be a renter for life. I also really like Lakewood, CA, a suburb of Long Beach. Can get apartments under $1000 a month. Not the South Orange County Safe, but not South Central LA either. It has much better weather than Inland Empire as well.

There are a lot of safe places to live. You need to decide what you want as far as lifestyle and go from there. Just like many cities, you have a good side and a not so good side. You can find some nice places in Orange County.

Get roommates and go for South Orange County. It's the last piece of coastal land that's still essentially crime-free.

Hello:
If you want to live near the City of L.A. but can't afford L.A. you can go to the valley (San Fernando Valley) many people, including stars have homes in the valley. The problem is that it is very hot during the summer, but so is L.A! Sherman Oaks, Universal City (where Universal Studios is), North Hollywood (NoHo), Tarzana, etc. You can also go to Burbank, Glendale which is pretty nice too. Santa Barbara is 1 1/2 hours from L.A. so it is not close. It is very expensive and is becoming pretty exclusive. It is extremely beautiful, has low crime rate, great beaches, great university too. Homes in mid-income areas go for 1million+ and even the homes in the worst parts of town are 800,000. |

The other problem is that it is not that much cheaper in the valley.

Look for a studio/grandma unit in South Pasadena. It's the same as it was in the 50's, a beautiful island of trees and Craftsman bungalows with lovely parks and a quaint downtown. You can find rent as cheap as you can anywhere else if you look and you're a close drive to all that is L.A. as it's just north of Downtown.
