The fire ring debate began in Orange County started with Newport Beach wanting to extinguish its 60 fire rings at Big Corona and Balboa Pier. In March the California Coastal Commission dodged a decision on Newport Beach’s request to ban fire rings, deferring to the AQMD.

Gee, thanks a lot, NB.

Is surfing next? L.A. already had the frisbee ban scare a few years ago; maybe OC will enact a real one.

Thanks everyone. I decided on a job in SB and living in Ventura -- I love both areas and it seems like a good compromise for everything I want for now and in the future.

I am super excited about getting there by the end of the month.

The feel of both Ventura and SB are exactly what I am looking for -- smaller town type of areas with a central downtown core and extremely easy access to the coast and to the outdoors (hills, hiking, etc). I don't mind a bigger city, but HB just doesn't have any central or community feel from what I have experienced.

Good call. Especially in the summer (ask the folks on the other side of the coastal range, as they bake miserably in the heat...and fire smoke).
Going to a show at the SB Bowl will solidify your confidence in this decision.

When I was young, there was a grassy spot above the SB Bowl where you could sit and hear the concerts just as well as having a paid ticket. I wonder if it's still there.

Depends how brave you are. I've known and seen people chased by security all around the place during shows, trying to hang out up there.

The Arlington and the Ventura Theater are nice venues as well. Many shows in the area by locals such as David Crosby, Bonnie Raitt, and Jackson Brown.

Oh yeah, forgot about that part!
Still got to hear a good part of whatever concert they had.

as a resident of Huntington Beach, I would say that Santa Barbara is much nicer, albeit much costlier.
Huntington Beach is very laid back and unprententious.

Ventura is actually cheaper than HB. For what I like, Ventura and SB have more to do and in closer proximity (hiking away from crowds, super cool downtown area, less population density). Ventura seems super laid back to me.
