It kinda sounds like it could of been a name of a Hobbit town in The Lord of the Rings to me.

A community that skinny dips in the river together stays together. Gualala..

Gualala has the planned ocean front community of Sea Ranch just to the south.. Sea Ranch is rather affluent. This helps the starving artisans not starve quite as much... Not much of a stop for those tourists brave enough to take hwy 1 up all the way up from the Bay area to Mendocino. If they do stop it is more likely in Point Arena just to the north of Gualala. (G has a W sound)

Seriously though, I doubt it is a fit for the OP... bit too remote and isolated for most folks. It is more like an island.. A place to get away from the hustle and bustle of Mendocino village...LOL

Do check out Cambria... In my personal top 5 California villages... Walking or just lounging on Moonstone beach is deeply healing/soothing... (All those glass smooth stones against ones skin, the strong beach break, and the overcast sky.) Place just evokes creativity... Wonderful, active, together people makes for a glowing town..

Senno.....Idlewild...... Funny, a place loaded with Cedar, but no one gets allergies? Must be the cosmic energy of the place! hey? LOL

Or a classic album:

Plenty of folks living or passing through in the CA town enjoy songs off this (especially the bikers).

I love Ojai. I also lived in Idyllwild (part time... it may be a bit claustrophobic for full-time) for 10 years and love it up there too. It's a bigger place, but how about Encinitas?

I think Claremont "The City of Trees and PhD's" may fit the bill. Very walkable, a bit artsy and near the San Gabriel Mountains for hiking. Also has a Metrolink Train Station that can get you to LA in about an hour.

California is HUGE. Are you thinking Far North Coastal (like Mendocino or Gualala)?, or Bay Area Northern (including Bodega Bay, Point Reyes Station, Mill Valley, San Rafael, San Anselmo, Ross, etc.)? Bay Area (Sausolito, Tiburon, Alameda, Berkeley, Emeryville, Montara, Moss Beach, Half Moon Bay, too many to list, really)? North Central (like Boulder Creek, Santa Cruz, Monterey)? Real Central Coast (Cambria, Pismo, SLO, Morro Bay)? Or South Central Coast-ish? (Paso Robles, Solvang, Carpinteria, Santa Barbara, Ojai, Filmore..)? Or less coastal, like the Gold Rush towns near Sacramento? Or the mountain towns in the Sierras? Or the areas out by Lake Tahoe? Or the cute areas in the greater LA area? Or further south? I think there's a LOT of narrowing down to do! What a fun task! LOL!
