As unions fail in California a new tactic arises to increase wages and elevate workers: ask the voters to approve living-wage ballot measures:

Low-wage workers turning to voters for pay raises - Los Angeles Times

Now all the anti-union sentiment can refocus on being anti-voter ... ahem ...

"a $13-per-hour minimum wage for hundreds of Long Beach hotel workers."

Good, the tourists can fund that. Similar to NYC's 12% hotel bill tax.

These same voters will blame the business when a car wash costs or fast food meal costs $15.

Except, of course, that wages make up a pretty small component of the cost of fast food, car wash, etc so this would never happen.

Anyhow, these increases in minimum wages aren't going to change much. Long live Rome.

I don't mind raising the level of minimum wage, but it shouldn't be aimed at a single industry. If a city wants to have voters make the decision, it should pertain to ALL workers in that city.

No argument from me there. For a change.

Labor cost average 30% of gross sales for a fast food restaurant, and this is not a pretty small component for a restaurant. Raise labor cost 25%, and prices are going to have to go up.

We all know that things get passed through to the consumer as much as possible.

Isn't you the very one that was complaining about how low paid some people are in CA? Then a possible solution comes along and you point out the flaw in that as well.

They may find that people won't eat much fast food in Long Beach and San Jose I guess. But that's for them to determine in LB and SJ. Or maybe people will still eat out, just less. Or maybe it won't change consumers behaviors at all. We do love our fast food donchaknow.

So if voters are replacing unions, are workers going to pay them dues?
