Hello everybody,

We are 4 guys from The Netherlands, like snowboarding in the US or Canada.
Now we would like to go boarding in California, Lake Tahoe / Mt Mammoth, in 2014.

What's the best month ( snowfall, powder) in this area?

Kind regards,

Bob

(Mammoth)

Show shows up late in the Eastern Sierra - February has always been my favorite month for Mammoth.

Well, I wasn't about to type my longis response with my phone.

I live in the Sierras and am a Skier. Tahoe is about a three hour drive for me and I live 45 minutes from a local Ski Resort so I pay pretty close attention to snow conditions.

As to the best month if I were traveling from Europe, I agree that February is your best bet. Mid-February for snow in general. As for powder, well that is a matter of luck. If you are here during a storm or the day after, you will have true powder for a day at most resorts, because things get skiied out fairly quick at the major resorts. However if you are talking about skiing off piste, then one can do that anytime and the Tahoe area is a good area for that-as is Mammoth.

In the Tahoe area Kirkwood has the best snow. Homewood is a nice place if you want a small, inexpensive family style resort. If you like crowds and high price tickets Heavenly or Northstar is your place. A lot of people like Alpine.

Tips:avoid the weekends if possible. traffic and crowds

From Europe fly direct to San Francisco or LA. In the winter you run the risk of delays if you have a stop over due to the weather. SF for Tahoe. LA for Mammoth.
