Default Declaring High Value Items On Move To Ca

I am moving to CA in the coming month and would like to know if anyone has had any bad experiences in claiming high value items {China} with the moving company for insurance purposes and then having the particular boxes be "lost". Is it better to not advertise the specific boxes and let them be moved incognito as part of the total shipment and hope that all goes well?

FYI, I am using Mayflower with storage in NJ, and then items will be moved to CA when destination address is confirmed.

Thanks for the time!

Westward is on a distinguished road
I used a moving company once, leaving CA. Never again will I let a moving company touch, let alone move my valuables. First, they broke the items I'd asked them not 5 minutes before - of all my things - to please be very careful with, as they were not replaceable. They claimed a sudden breeze from the window blew them over on my kitchen table where they were packing them. They had said they couldn't insure anything that wasn't packed by them, so I'd trusted them.

They wrapped a footstone, yes, a footstone with a valuable bronze item. Can you guess how the two items got together? Neither can I. They paid a measly amount for the damaged item, but I can never get it replaced or repaired. There were other similarly carelessly packed items of little consequence, as well as a ton of unnecessary paper to pad the corporate-paid weight. Picture toilet paper and shampoo wrapped in paper, while most bathroom/bedroom items were dumped in the boxes like trash, then padded with paper. If you can pack unbreakable things yourself, do it.

They also lost a box. But since they did all the packing and numbering, we haven't a clue what was in the box, so we can't prove a thing, so we didn't get reimbursed for it. You can't, after all, chase after 6 packers going every direction in your house, packing all at once, to note what's in each box. If I'd packed the box myself, the situation would be the same...proving what I claimed was in the box. Oh yeah, and that it was in working/unbroken condition. Record collection? Prove which ones, show the receipts.

You're darned if you do, and darned if you don't. If you're worried about some things, just pack and drive those boxes yourself. Let the movers move the furniture and other junk. They're going to damage that too, and you'll have enough to worry about getting that fixed. Mine spent an hour looking for every tiny scratch on my piano, but made several large chips that I had to get repaired, if you can call it that. They also tore all the dust/bug covers tacked to the bottoms of all the couches and box springs.

Oh yeah, the auto carrier ruined the paint job across the entire top of my 2 yr old car, and delivered it to me at midnight, when I couldn't see the million white spots on the black paint from nose to tail. Didn't get a dime on that as they declared that the paint job was faulty. I had my other cars delivered in an enclosed van, and they were fine. If you have a car moved by van, you can try putting your favorite breakables in the trunk, if it's not on the same key as the ignition, which they need to move the car.

These guys packing and moving people's things are not exactly caring, or understanding of the value of something they don't own. They're told to get in there and pack up a house as fast as they can, and they know it's not their problem if you open a box 2 mos later and find something damaged. Who can prove it was them, and not the guys at the other end? I know people who have had much better experiences, but I wouldn't take the chance again. The laws are different in each state regarding movers, and lots of them look like problem people. They have lots of ways to get out of paying that replacement value they promise. Good luck.
