The thing about California, the majority of the counties in the state are Red. It is the highly compacted high population cities that are blue. Here is a map from the 2012 election showing the red blue counties voting for and against Obama.

Her is an interesting posting in about.com about the red blue areas of the country. An awful lot of what is said, is true though stated in joke form. Really something to think bout..

Okay. Just cleaned up the spew spray from my laughter. The Mercatus Center huh?

"The Mercatus Center at George Mason University (GMU) in the United States is a non-profit[1] American market-oriented research, education, and outreach think tank affiliated with the Koch family."

This would be the same Mercatus Center that ranks legal gay marrying pot smoking Washington State 40th for personal freedoms?

Yep. That's where most of all the people live. You know, the one's who make up the vote totals.

Add "funny" to the database of things conservatives don't do.

Funny that most of the unfree states have the highest populations in the country, being free is a matter of a opinion which Mercatus does not dictate for the general public, obviously the people living in the unfree states must feel that they are pretty free or at least free enough to keep them there.

Although of course, to Mercatus.. being free is able to run in the woods naked while shooting your gun in the air probably, and they can keep all that freedom.

Dear Conservatives Who Think States Like California and New York Restrict Your Personal Freedoms,

Please tell me in 500 words or less what exactly the "Nanny States" keep you from doing on a day-to-day basis; that you are free to do in the heavenly red states that you seem to believe have no regulation whatsoever. I want specifics.

For example, I'll go first: "I like to drink alcohol. I lived in Texas for 33 years and was unable, by state law, to purchase alcohol on a specific day of the week because the state allowed metaphysical nonsense that I did not agree with to supersede my personal freedom to purchase alcohol for half of the weekend. Thankfully, when I moved to out of Nanny State Texas to New York and then California, I was able to purchase alcohol all seven days of the week without state imposed restrictions based on someone else's belief that they knew better than I what was best for me."

Your turn.

I'm not sure about this but isn't it also true that alcohol sold in Utah has to have a slightly lower % by volume rate? Again, I've only heard this so it could be complete BS.

Correct. 3.2% and never above. It's a good thing the red states are looking out for us sinners in the name of metaphysical nonsense and not making laws based on actual public good.

Trying to curb obesity which costs taxpayers a fortune every year? That's restricting personal freedom.

Making laws based on loose interpretations of religious beliefs? That, sir, is morals right there.

I'm shocked, SHOCKED that there's hypocrisy at work here.

Kinda like the residents of these "free" states have the freedom to buy any firearm under the sun, but yet they don't allow for the freedom of the marriage of gays.
