Default Antioch California? What's it like?

What is Antioch, CA like? I live in Alameda, CA now. But I'm thinking of moving to Antioch. Be as blunt as you please.

Always seemed very ghetto to me with large run-down sections. Basically a lower-middle class area. According to census data it's mostly white but from going there I always thought it was mostly black and latino. You should be able get a fairly cheap house there because I believe it is the hardest hit community in the Bay Area as far as foreclosures go. We looked there briefly but decided against continuing because a) it's Antioch and b) it's too far away from San Francisco to comfortably commute. The 4 is a parking lot most of the day and BART only goes as far as Pittsburg currently. The weather isn't nearly as nice as Alameda.

The whole Highway 4 corridor is a lost cause at this point. Why do you want to leave Alameda?

I wouldnt live there cause its hella hot in the summer and traffic getting to and from SF-Oak-Berk is very, very bad. Hy 4 is one of the worst commutes in the entire bay area and the place seems to lack the sort of vibrant business district that I think should exist in cities with over 100,000 people.

That said,
people have been and continue to move there in droves to enjoy enormous homes on large lots for half what something similar would cost closer in.

I suppose the thing to do is spend time there and decide for yourself.

Don't move here. If you want to live somewhere in Contra Costa County, choose Walnut Creek or Pleasant Hill. If you have to commute out of eastern Contra Costa County to a job in Oakland, San Francisco or the south bay, you will have to leave no later than 5AM to beat the traffic on Highway 4. Violent crime is on the increase in Antioch. Large chains (Macys, Sears and JCPenney) have stores here (JC Penney is coming back after leaving the area), but the stores those chains put here are not adequate (kind of like, "Okay shut up Antioch, we put our 'outlet' store there, so quit crying'), and don't compare with the stores that are in Concord. Traffic is horrible, it takes 15-20 minutes to get from the downtown area to the newer part of Antioch where all the shopping is. It is very hot here in the Summer, akin to Bakersfield. Brentwood and Oakley aren't much better. The main problem is there is only one freeway serving a very fast growing area, and that freeway met its limit 10years ago, and although Antioch residents have been paying the extra sales tax for BART (OVER 40 YEARS) --- it will never come here as promised. So that said, DON'T move to Antioch. The Section 8 problem in Antioch seems worse than other communities, put it this way, you can buy a $1,000,000 home, and have a Section 8 rental next door, with broken down cars, a dead lawn, and morons for neighbors who don't care .....

It's a hole. I've lived here for over 50 years. It used to be a nice place to live, but overdevelopment has made it a terrible place to be. Simply, there are just too many people. The roads are too crowded, and the police can't possibly handle all the criminals that practice their trade here. The schools are overcrowded and not very well managed.
There's not alot to do, and it's too dangerous to go out at night anyway. Not Oakland or Richmond dangerous, but you can end up getting shot or robbed if you're not careful. And you can bet the police won't do thing one about it if you do.

This is an old thread. If anyone is interested in moving to Antioch, read the prior threads at
the bottom of this page. Or take a drive around town and make up your own mind.

My dad lived there when he was transferred by his job to work in Pittsburgh and he said in the morning he was the only one that left for work. There vehicle was broken into and vandalized. Their house was broken into and only a large kitchen knife was stolen then the next day somebody was stabbed nearby but I don't know if it was the same knife but makes you wonder,Creepy.

They hated it and didn't live there very long because he was laid off. My sister had to go to high school there and she said it was crazy but I don't know if the kids still bring guns to school. I'm really not making this up my step mom was grocery shopping and when she came out to put her groceries in the car there was a dent in her car the size of a quarter and pressed in deep like a sharp hard object pierced it and it was on the part of the car that is between the windshield and the side passenger[shotgun] window on that thin strip of metal. Any how I wouldn't live there if I were you.
