Thinking about buying a home in the area, but want to separate fact from fiction. Prices, albeit affordable for Sonoma, aren't cheap. The area looks old and really rundown in some parts, but really pretty and rural also. I love the idea of being in Sonoma with all of its wonderful food and wine, but away from the square and it's intense congestion. It also bothers me that although the postal address is Sonoma, that a lot of people locally don't think of it so. So, is this area Sonoma or not and is it a good place to live?

Don't let "rundown and cheap" scare you. Just about appearances. The rich buy there. If you can't afford it you won't make it.

It's funny, when we drive into Sonoma for lunch or dinner, the traffic/congestion isn't in town so much as it is in Boyes. Boyes appears to be a mostly working class Hispanic neighborhood as you drive through it. It looks perfectly safe and there's a lot of nice little restaurants and stores there. I can't vouch for the actual night-time safety, but it's certainly not a dangerous looking barrio or anything. I admit it's clearly not as classy as the part of Sonoma you're thinking of near the square where 1400 sf homes start at $800k, but it's probably worth looking at (Boyes).

But you're right, I agree that the locals don't seem to consider Hot Springs "Sonoma" proper. I could be wrong.
