Bakersfield is far and away a better place to live than Fresno. I've lived there. Wouldn't live there again, but it has some very nice aspects.
Bottom line, both places have some really rough people and social problems.

...only if you want to farm. Central California is great for that.

Seriously, do you know how many run-down, backwater, uncivilized parts of California there are? And you think Sacramento is the worst of it?? Have you ever left your house???

Fresno has it charms. Tower District is Nice. Old Fig Garden is great. Clovis is good. Metro of around 1 Million so plenty to do.

Actually you might be thinking of the moniker "cow town" for Sac, armpit belongs to Fresno.
Sacramento is alright and has some great neighborhhods...it's definately not like Fresno.

Sacramento is not the armpit of CA. It has changed and by the way I have never saw a cow in Sac.

If you could take care of your major for school anywhere else than Fresno, than I strongly suggest doing just that. I grew up there and was thrilled to leave. As mentioned by another poster, there are things to do to keep you occupied outside of Fresno; Sierra Nevadas, visiting the Bay area, Reno, Tahoe, just to name a few.

No, Fresno is not the nicest place, but I went to Fresno State, had a great time, graduated, moved on to better things. If the cost of living is a factor, Fresno might be a good place for you. You can always move after you graduate. What's your major?

Don't Let Anyone Fool You About Fresno. The Only Thing It Ever Really Had To Put Up With Is The Name To Most People It Sounds Like A Dirty Tree Noone here wants to admit to living in a dirty tree There's A Gigantic Population that has the ordinary life it offers. Theres Probably A Few That Can Live 10 Times Beter So If Your Your Going To Move Here Youv'e Got To Think Of It As A Gigantic Center That's was once made for serving Farmers But now takes care of a gigantic population of ordinary people who love ordinary life
