We are moving to California the end of this month I do know that they stop you at the border and ask if you you have fruits, vegetables, and animals and you have to have a health certificate for the animal. Any idea how many days before you actually arrive do you have to have this piece of paper??

Where are you moving from? If you live in the United States, you don't need to worry about having a health certificate.

What animal? Some can't be brought into California at all.

Yes, for horses you do need a health certificate (just inform the vet which state(s) you are traveling through and s/he should provide the needed paperwork) and I also needed to provide the address of the place the horse was going to (something I had not been informed of). I can't tell you about other livestock.

My dogs had their tags on and they never asked anything about them. I've gone back and forth between CA AZ and CA OR multiple times with my dogs (always had current tags and I carried the docs showing current rabies vac), but never been asked to see any paperwork on them at the border. They barely seemed to even glance at them most times.

This is true... I was assuming cats or dogs, but it could be something illegal like a ferret.

If you are bringing horses, especially through Nevada, make sure you have photo id with proof of ownership, that is photo id of the horses. and all current vaccinations required by Nevada. The brand inspectors can and do confiscate Horses passing through without proper paperwork.

And please remember, it is California, not cali.

Ferrets are fine. It's the owners that we're trying to keep out.

Because some people think they might escape and endanger wildlife. As if urban pigeons and raccoons and coyotes had anything to fear from a timid little domesticated ferret that doesn't recognize anything except ferret-food pellets as "food."
