Californians mean? LOL people on the West Coast tend to be the softest people in the country. You wanna see mean? Try Long Island, New York or anywhere in New Jersey.

I think it's all of the above. I have encountered extremely mean people, rude people, extremely nice people, fake people. I think everything is every where. LA might have more fake people, SF seems to have more rude people. However, it'll take meeting every Californian to know whether or not the majority is nice.

Most aren't too bad though. I've definitely encountered more genuine friendly, fake friendly, and uninterested people than mean or plain rude.

We Violently Crush Anybody Who Calls Us Mean
Why, it's a virtual internet meme
Here comes those violent Californeens
With their silly, fruits and nuts ways
Crushing our nuts with fierce display
of poetry and rhyme,
while they enjoy nice clime
And post in threads in their own time
Some sail the ocean sublime
while others mountain climb
in between taking the time
to crush anyone who calls us mean
some even do some fishing
and will often leave you wishing
you hadn't called Californians mean
as they take the time to rheem
you are behind, take some advice
and recognize, that at closing time
the forum stays open and we find
some are mean tis true
so I'd be on the watch if I was you
Or just be nice and you will find
we are laid back, chilled out dudes
who might tell a joke or two
in between a poem or a rhyme
but get out of sorts
and we will report
with a line or quick retort, sport!

That's what I thought. I've never heard of Californians being called characterized as mean.

Hey, gaijin, how come when I post somewhere around the forum that New Yorkers tend to be gruff and rude (you know the type), the NY-ers on the forum disagree vehemently? When I'm in NY, NY-ers admit they're gruff and loud and kinda mean, they say it's a defense mechanism or something, and then they apologize. But here on the forum, they insist NY-ers are the nicest people.

??

It's funny how we notice other people doing stuff we don't like, yet we then go ahead and do the same thing. It's the human condition. .

I don't think the Bay Area is any less materialistic than SoCal. I think it just manifests differently. What's cool in the Bay Area is a bit different than in SoCal...but there's still a "cool factor" and lots of wannabes trying to emulate it.

If you are a nice person, you will meet nice people wherever you go. People who complain about rude people just need to look in the mirror.

I haven't really noticed any "cool factors" in the Bay Area. Just people doing their thing, going about their work and leisure-time activities. What in the Bay Area is considered "cool"? Aside from, maybe, enjoying the nature around the Bay?

I always thought the rest of the world thought of us as crazy liberal tree-hugging hippies...or crazy, liberal, tree-hugging rich actors. Though explaining Reagan and Schwartzenneger was difficult.

Arnie won by his celebrity, and it was a recall election, not a standard election. Reagan (and don't forget Nixon!), well, that had to do with the fact that CA used to be more conservative than it is now. Reagan (and especially Nixon) were a very long time ago.
