So my daughter is visiting from Upstate New York and she brought her boyfriend, who has never been west of Texas. They flew into SFO, traveled north to Mendocino County, then east to Sacramento and then to our place in the Sierras.
I asked boyfriend what he thought of CA. He said, it is nothing at all like he imagined (
) he thought was it all sunny warm beaches, palm trees everywhere, urban everywhere etc, etc, etc.
Yep says I. And I mentioned that CA gets the most snow in North America, is 97% rural and the closest ocean beach is a six hour drive.
I smiled.

Ah, 'perception by television' is so common.
