News, Massive Pileup Closes Calif. Highway.
More than 100 cars and trucks crashed on a fog-shrouded freeway Saturday, killing at least two people and injuring dozens more, the California Highway Patrol said.
Eighteen big rigs were involved in the massive pileup on Highway 99 just south of Fresno as patches of dense fog obscured visibility on the heavily traveled roadway, CHP officials said.

I was a firefighter in Fresno County in the late 70's. We were first in on one of those things on I-5 one time. Talk about surreal. It felt like I drove 10 minutes to get from one end to the other.
Drive SLOW in the fog, better yet get off the road and wait it out.

Every 3 or 4 years, there seems to be a major pileup on one of the freeways in the Central Valley, due to the fog. The last big one I remember was on Highway 58 east of Bakersfield about two years ago. I also remember reading about numerous similar pileups on Highway 99 and Interstate 5 over the years.
The worst one I remember happened back around 1992 or 1993 just before Thanksgiving. If I remember correctly, there were about 153 vehicles involved. It took place on I-5 somewhere north of Buttonwillow. I knew someone that was traveling that way on that day, but they went through before the big pileup. From what little I was able to find online, it looks like the worst pileup in history was about 300 cars!
About a month ago, there were multiple pileups on Highways 14 and 58 due to blowing sand and dust, when visibility was reduced nearly to zero. This happens much less than the fog related pileups, but can be just as bad.
The thing to keep in mind is that when someone goes into a zero visibility situation at 75 to 80 mph, they will suddenly slow when they can't see anything around them. For the folks behind them, this can result in disaster. The best bet is to just get off the road and wait for conditions to improve. Doing so could save your life.
