Burlingame
Does anyone know anything about this town? I am wanting to take a travel nurse position there. I need to know town size, crime (be honest) ratio of whites to others. I will not be using a car and will probably walk to the hospital so all of this is important to me. Any help appreciated.

Well, first off, there's no bus service to speak of unless you both live and work near El Camino Real, and most of the roads are too narrow and dangerous for cycling. You'll certainly need a car. If you do take that bus, the first thing that will strike you is that Burlingame is nothing but a neverending string of apartments, apartments, apartments, apartments, stretching as far as the eye can see. But it's a safe and, if you can believe it, affluent town that no one should have any worries about living in. The only problem is affording it!
To put it another way - Burlingame is the town that Ed Jew secretly lived in while claiming a phony San Francisco address. That should tell you something.

Burlingame is a safe community
The town of Burlingame sits on the San Francisco Peninsula about 20 miles south of San Francisco, along the bay. It's a high wealthy town, with a charming downtown area, mostly single family homes with a median price of $1.2 million and shares a zip code with Hillsborough, 94010, one of the most expensive communities in California and the US. There is little crime outside of the usual car break-ins, and the like. Major crime? No. The schools are excellent. The people are generally well educated, the weather is mild year round. It's close to SFO, a 35 minute train ride into San Francisco or south to San Jose. There is a community hospital, Mills-Peninsula located at the northern city limit, next to Millbrae, that is being rebuilt to meet new building codes. The hospital, from what I hear, is considered one of the better run facilities around here.
Burlingame would be a great place to be as a travelling nurse. You can get up to the wine country, north of San Francisco or in the east bay with ease. Monterey/Carmel are about 90 minutes away, and it's easy to do things in the area. There are many apartments near the downtown area. Rents will be expensive to someone from other places in the country, but we have no snow and you can enjoy outdoor activities 12 months a year.
There are apartments near the hospital, a small shopping center there, and the train station is about 2 blocks from there. You can indeed live three without a car and still take advantange of all that Northern California has to offer pretty easily.

Someone could answer this for you and me:
Is Mil's Peninsula Hospital near here???
Do you have to take your traveling RN job to Burlingame?
I have a friend living on the Peninsula, she says it's quite expensive, but the job market is good?

Mills Hospital is at the corner of El Camino and Trousdale in Burlingame, so at least that is accessible by transit.

Burlingame is a very safe, quiet, fairly expensive, suburban town... I actually grew up next-door (San Mateo Park), and spent most of my teenage days hanging out on Burlingame Ave. The only somewhat "shady" area includes the streets off Broadway Ave., closer to El Camino Real - my ex-boyfriend lived there, and at least back then it was kinda icky. The nicest parts are near Burlingame Ave. and west of El Camino as you head towards Hillsborough... the former being mostly apartments/condos, and the latter being pricey single-family homes. It's a great place to live, though I personally find it too "white/yuppie" - but it seems that's what you're looking for, so I'd say go for it. You could also consider nearby Millbrae or San Mateo, but those aren't too much cheaper.

I'm quite familiar with the area. I live in Millbrae on the Burlingame border, about 2 blocks from Mills Peninsula. Burlingame would be a wonderful place to call home. It's very safe and there is public transportation available (buses that go up Trousdale as well as on El Camino, the train and BART (the Millbrae station, about 5 blocks away from the hospital). I really can't say anything negative about it .
