Housing
Where in California is all of the affordable housing? I would like to buy a fully loaded house for around 250k to 275k brand new. With around 2800 sq. ft. But I am having problems finding them. I would like to live fairly close to the beach if possible. And if not, a small commute wouldn't be bad.
I really don't care what part of Cali. Just as long as it is away from gangs, drugs and snow.
Any help would be great.

Try Merced. You will not find a house near a beach town in your price range.

It seems a little odd that you "don't really care what part of CA" - even if you can get a house for that price, state income tax can be as high as 9.3%, sales tax up to 8.75%, property tax 2% plus.. do you just want to have a CA mailing address? Live in Oregon on the border and get a PO box in Eureka..

I doubt you'll find a 2800 sqft home in California for under 300K. Your best bets in the Central Valley or out in the desert. The closest you'll get to the beach is probably Coalinga, though thats still an hour or so drive. The cheapest beach area home your likely to find is probably going to be on the central coast, Santa Maria or Lompoc, think around 400K. Maybe something in the Far northern part of the state...maybe. If you want a new home, check out Centex homes, they are some of the cheapest. Best of luck.

Bakersfield is a nice city, and i'm sure you'll be able to find homes in those price range there, and you'll be only 2-3 hours away from the beaches.

ugh, how about Mexico. I think you'll find beach houses or at least condos at that price in Baja's lesser known areas. In CA Im almost certain that its not doable for that amount of money. But who knows?

Gee, ya think that might be the reason people are leaving California by the hundreds of thousands for more affordable states? Hey, I'd like a fully loaded Lexus LS460 brand new but I can't find one for $20k. What gives?

If a house like that existed in CA, maybe we would still be there!
