More like runners are nuts. You ever see a runner who doesn't look as if he/she is giving birth to quadruplets without the benefit of pain meds?

Yeah these people are nuts. We should make them stay in that desert.

They are just looking for attention I think.

In Mom's case it was running that helped her kick a pack a day smoking habit she started at age 18.

She was in her 50's and very frustrated that every time she quit... she would start again.

One day a friend told her about running and every time she wanted to smoke she went for a run... she must have really wanted cigarettes because in the 60's she was nationally ranked and did only Ultras... her last one was at age 75.

Now she walks... running does take a toll on your joints. At age 79 she can go for a 10 mile walk with her Granddaughters no problem... Heart and Lungs are like a person in their 20's and this is after 30+ years of smoking...

Yep, it can depend on your build. I'm built more like a linebacker and running just kills me. I couldn't walk right for 3 days after my last distance race. Good on your Mom. I wish mine had went that route vs toting around an oxygen machine because of smoking.

Her Doctor counseled her on problems associated with running.

I work with him and he said she is an inspiration and given the choice of a pack a day smoking or running... it's not even a question.

She was starting to have health issues plus gaining weight... running turned it all around even did her first marathon in her white nursing shoes...

For those in the SF East Bay... her home training grounds are Lake Chabot.

She does miss competing... but very happy to go each day for a couple of miles walking with her 12 year old Australian Shepherd...

Only regret was being pulled at mile 66 on the Tevis a few years ago... it was the year with the huge snow pack and it really slowed her pace.
