This has been talked about and rumored for years. I live in Hawaii part-time, and here's the thing:
1. The majority of Hawaii's homeless are actually from Hawaii -- they're not going "back".
2. Not a whole lot of Californians "escape" to Hawaii compared to those from other, mostly colder, states.
3. And, bleak as homelessness is anywhere, most of the non-Hawaiian homeless don't want to go back to even harder struggles on the mainland
... so, very few will line up for / accept a ticket.

Also note, this is not anything new for mainland cities to do, including California. From the article:
Quote:
Paying to send homeless people away isn't a novel tactic. New York City, San Francisco, Baton Rouge, La., and Fort Lauderdale, Fla., are among the cities that have offered one-way transport tickets to homeless people.
California's population, and homeless population, is so large, the state could absorb all of those Hawaii might get to return to the mainland and never notice the increase. But for those that do return, they will be from, and return to, many states.

I read the article.

And it is not the number of homeless coming here that would hurt us but like Hawaii will cost CA millions of dollars. 17,000 homeless is nothing to look away from.

From the article..."Hawaii hopes the "return to home" program will help the state save on the millions it spends each year on food, shelter and other services for the homeless."

You did? Then why would you wonder that California's homeless population might increase by virtue of Hawaii sending a few of their homeless back to the mainland? Especially as the article also says:
Quote:
"It's fractional, it's not for 5,000 homeless people. It's going to be a handful of homeless people that we send home … to their support unit,"
It's not for 17,000. It's not even for 5,000. And however many it's for, they will be spread out across the 48.

This is a discussion about Hawaii's homeless issue and how they are going to relieve this burden on their state. And yes I am certain CA's homeless population will increase due to this. Hardly are they going to spread out over 48 states. CA is a haven for people who like to live off of the government dole...it is one of the things CA does best so why wouldn't they come here?

And sure they are going to say it's fractional and only a handful...believe me they will send all of them to the mainland if they could! We have no idea how many they are shipping out.

OMG this is stupid. The article says "handful" and "back to their support unit". WHY would a homeless person go from HI to CA if they will just to continue being homeless?

Because Hawaii wants them out and might be cutting off or reducing their welfare help.

Yes and I wonder about their definition of "handful"

So they are planning to save millions and claim they can achieve this by sending away a "handful"

They wouldn't. It isn't even available to them in the first place, or isn't designed to be... these greyhound policies are often abused. It's for somebody who has family who will take them in from wherever they are from but can't afford to get from Hawaii.

Apparently we spend $10.95 billion in public funds for the 150,000 chronically homeless people in the country. They're basically amazingly expensive. They're mostly alcoholics and drug addicts and in and out of the emergency room on a regular basis, in and out of jail, etc, etc.

Right. We have no idea. Because it's none of our business. And just because the plan is to repatriate homeless who want to go back, and who have family that will receive them, and that is not many of Hawaii's homeless -- well, we should assume the worst instead that they will conspire to dump on only California instead of sending these people to the states they come from and where they have family. Where do you get your ideas?
