Hello,

Back in May I purchased a vehicle in my home state of Michigan where I registered, tagged, insured and paid sales tax on it. I'm wondering, now that I plan on living in California long term, whether or not I will have to pay sales tax on the vehicle again if I register and plate the car in California? Thanks for your input ahead of time!

Question that need answered before you can get any help.

Were you a resident of California when you purchased the auto, or did you buy the auto before you moved to California?

If you were a resident of California when you purchased the auto, you will definitively be taxed when you license it in California.

Yes. Any vehicle purchased in another state within 365 days, use tax is due. However, the DMV will figure the California Use Tax (same as your current county sales tax) and will subtract whatever tax you paid in Michigan, and only the balance will be due.
