How about Santa Barbara?
The only thing I don't like about Santa Barbara, besides the COL, is the oil rigs and tar on the beach because of them. When i first saw them, I thought, Oh look a the big ships...that never move...lol!

You can get the tar off your feet with baby oil, but the beach reminds me of the beaches in Texas. There are way better beaches in CA.

A lot of that tar on the beaches are from natural seepage. It was there long before the first oil well was drilled and the first oil rig was constructed. Not to say that there have never been accidents in the past - there certainly have been.

Ventura. I also like Santa Barbara but for those that are concerned about the cost to live in SB, Ventura is the next best thing. Also positioned on the coast with amazing ocean views, much of what SB has to offer is in Ventura. Many of the same eateries open second locations in Ventura. Lots of outdoor activities in the area. Back in 2006 Outdoor Magazine named Ventura as the #2 beach community in the world. Not only is the QOL good but the cost to fund that QOL is lower than in many places like SB. The weather is amazing as well.

A location many prefer are the foothill communities in the Sierras. They are walkable communities where people know each other, and mutual help and support is always available. There is always plenty to do for the outdoors person.
