SF Metro - SF, Oakland, San Jose, most of East Bay (but NOT Sacramento, although I doubt anyone would think so. Just making sure).

LA Metro - LA, Valley area all the way down and including Orange County. Do NOT include Inland Empire, such as Riverside, San Bernandino, etc.

San Diego Metro - Camp Pendleton down to Mexican Border, Alpine to the east.

So, what do you think? Which cities outside of these 3 coastal metro areas provides the best overall living in your opinion?

Wine Country, as in north of San Francisco.

What little I know of San Luis Obispo, I would consider it up there.

SLO seems like a great choice.

How about Santa Barbara?

Yes, if you don't need a major city or major airport within 100 miles, and money is not a factor.

Very expensive (to live) and very touristy on weekends, mostly Los Angeles get-aways. Beautiful town however. Wonderful weather.

Some good choices mentioned. I'll also throw in Lake Tahoe for mountain living and Palm Springs for desert living.
