There are 4 or 5 big ones between the NV state line and Tom's Place (just north of Bishop). But it's 4 lanes almost the entire way from Reno to the Hwy 14 junction. Your biggest concern might be the weather. Chain controls are often imposed in various spots along 395, and since it's such a roller coaster you might have to chain up and remove chains repeatedly.

Hwy 395 is by far one of the best and most scenic drives. I've taken it all the way to Lake Tahoe and have also taken it to Yosemite via the Tioga Pass. So many places to stop and relax. My favorite time of year to take the drive is in early spring when the Sierras are still covered in snow.

What month is 395 likely to be clear of snow?
