There was a similar complaint post floating around last week on the Denver forum stating that everyone in Denver is rude and clueless on the roadways. Getting used to an areas driving styles seems to be more appropriate than constantly complaining about it. While So. Cal's traffic congestion is ridiculous IMO..the people seem to be no less or more rude to me than any other regions I have driven.

How exactly
do we drive? From my point of view, speaking as someone who learned to drive here and has done most of his driving here, there don't seem to be a lot of established rules other than the "me-first-of-way". You know, it's like the right-of-way, except that instead of the person who is on the right going first, it's the person who thinks they own the road going first. There isn't a consensus on who does actually own it. So you can see the difficulty.
I'm partially kidding around, but I can't really pick out much of a "driving style" here. I know that due to the traffic and the spaghetti freeway system that almost guarantees you'll find your preferred interchange (or the correct lane to use it) suddenly upon you without warning, L.A. does require you to be more assertive than some cities might. But we can't be the only city that has this phenomenon.
And there's a difference between assertively signaling to the guy in the next lane that you'd really really like for him to let you in, and just suddenly diving over and turning on your signal
as you do this, and Devil may care if there's actually someone in that lane who you might hit - clearly it's
their responsibility to see you and slam on the brakes.
I've lost count of the number of near-misses I've had in 2009 alone due to that tactic. So I guess the "driving style" here is "Assume anyone around you could decide to be a complete idiot and recklessly endanger life and limb at any time".

As far as driving, if people are driving too fast for you in the far left lane, move to the right. When entering the freeway try doing the same speed as those on the freeway. When on the Conejo Grade in Ventura County heading toward Camarillo, do not ride the brakes. Many do this on the 405 heading North towards the 101 and that is acceptable, everyone else is doing it. Not on the Conejo Grade on the 101, because when you hit the bottom of that grade you have plenty of time and distance to slow down, even if things get out of hand. I am not saying to speed or anything, just that drivers don't have to ride the brakes on that specific grade. I use these as examples, but within this nation everyone thinks that they are the best drivers. My thoughts are that they are the best drivers for their area. Bring a transplant into the area and every bad driver is better than someone who doesn't know the local driving custums and conditions.

That's pretty universal. However, if I'm going 5 over the speed limit and that's not enough for the person behind me, I might not feel so bad about making them change lanes to go around me... and subsequently get caught by the Highway Patrol dude who is just waiting for someone to illegally duck out of the diamond lane.
(Incidentally, how do folks colloquially refer to their diamond lane in other cities? I commonly use "carpool lane", though with the advent of hybrid cars, that usage is becoming outdated. I've heard people say "HOV lane", and that one throws me. I'm like, "What? Jay-Z has his own exclusive lane?")

That one can be tough if the
left lane is going the speed limit and it's a short ramp (and/or you have to come to a full stop on the ramp because the meter is on). But I definitely wouldn't jump in right in front of somebody and expect them to suddenly slow down.

That's all very specific stuff. I live in L.A. and I don't know those specific roads that well. I have my own set of rules for local roads in the Pasadena area, and I don't really expect folks to know the ins and outs of those perfectly, but I just figure the common sense law applies - if you need to go slower than everyone else, do what you can to get out of everyone else's way. (This is most applicable when climbing the Grapevine and other long haul grades, probably including the ones you mentioned.)
Come to think of it, when does one ever get to
speed up on the 405?

I think it's fair to assume that no matter where you are, someone won't know these ins and outs, and I think that's fine so long as they're not cluelessly obstructing traffic for those who do know the area and are trying to traverse the rout efficiently.

SF Def has some interesting folks
So I moved here from Cleveland Oh and without a doubt I have been encountered with more rude and self absorbed people that I have ever encountered in Cleveland, Florida, Cincy or Columbus. I can say without a doubt and with the instances to proove it that atleast there is something different about SF....
I'm sure at times I can be one of those people too...I admit it...but here it is way more obvious from others.

(1) TRAFFIC YIELDS PEDESTRIANS IN PARKING AREAS, NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND.
(2) WHEN APPROACHING A BACKING CAR, STOP AND WAIT FOR THE OTHER CAR TO FINISH BACKING UP. YOU'LL GET TO WHERE YOU NEED TO GET TO IN YOUR PRETTY LITTLE BMW/MERCEDES JUST FINE.
Oh and by the way, when someone holds the door for you, say thank you.
Can't wait to get the $$#&@ out of this **** hole.
I understand your frustration, people who don't know how to drive and are not courteous can be annoying. You gotta remember though California is only 1 of the 50 states where idiots rule the road. Indiana is known for it's Indy 500 Speedway...but the drivers here are slow, dumb, OVER cautious and scared of the road and the cars around them. I was actually happy to drive in the L.A. area because people drove way better than in the midwest.

Of course not. I am now vacationing in China and I cannot count the number of times that I was almost hit by a car crossing the street even when the light was GREEN! Now THAT is rude, reckless and dangerous! Not to mention that in crowded areas, people will bump into you and say nothing. Some of them don't even look where they are going and others won't even move out of the way even if they know are trying to get by them on the sidewalk. Trust me, CA is NOT the only place where there are rude people.

Maybe we need a post that recognizes all the good things that people do. Why is it that many want to talk about how they were trearted poorly but forget to mention the times that someone did something nice for them. Seems that people have this need to get back at, complain about, or focus on how they were offended and never seem to mention those that are making their life easier, offering them a seat, opening a door for them, or driving in a considerate manner. I guess we expect everyone to act like that and forget to recognize the good things, but consume ourselves with the bad things. I am sure that no one in any other area of the nation is as bad as those Californians that have offended you. No other state has someone that offends I guess.
