California grizzly bear - Wikipedia

The California grizzly (Ursus arctos californicus) was hunted to extinction, with the last sighting in 1924. I find it tragic that we killed off the native apex predator that graces our State Flag and is mascot to countless schools. Every time I see our flag, I'm reminded that there are no more brown bears in the Golden State. The California condor went extinct in the wild but is slowly being reintroduced from captive bred stocks.

On the other hand, re-introduction will inevitably lead to horrible bear-human encounters. It will probably put off some people from visiting our parks, decreasing revenue.

I don't know which subspecies of brown bear will be the best candidate to bring back or how it will affect the balance of nature in our parks.

I'm completely undecided. What say you?

I don't get the title of the thread. I can see the possibility of increasing the brown bear population because they aren't extinct (right?). But if the grizzly bears are extinct, how can they be reintroduced?

Other bears are already plentiful in parts of CA. If a bear is menacing a rural homeowner's or ranchers pets, livestock, family, etc., the rule is "Shoot, shovel, and shut up."

Grizzlys are only extinct in California with the last known one killed or seen in the early 1900's.

No room for Grizzlys in this state any longer.

Isn't the correct term then extirpated, not extinct?
