Hey folks! I'm from southern California and am thinking of going to Humboldt State University next fall. I love the surrounding redwoods and the physical characteristics of the area (geography major) but I'm worried about the diversity of the county/school/town. I'm Asian (Filipino) and grew up in a very diverse neighborhood and I was wondering how the town in general feels towards Asian people. I was born in California and consider myself Californian first and foremost, but I understand how ignorant people might think otherwise. Any Asian people that went to Humboldt state or live in a nearby town please tell me about your experience here; any comments are appreciated!

If you're worried go to San Francisco State and live in Daly City. You'll find fewer "ignorant" (is that a diversity metaphor for this thread meaning "white"?) people there. Paalam.

Arcata is full of people from all over the place. No need to be worried at all.
I'm part Filipino and worked in Arcata for three years.
Arcata is a very laid back place. People are more curious about 'who you are' than concerned.
But that's the full time Arcatians. Those that attend the University will come from all over and they are more likely to have issues.
However, Arcata's draw is it's 'hippie reputation' so many of those who seek attend HSU tend to be fairly easy going already.

You won't have any problem in Arcata, not with racism. The petty theft problem, on the other hand, is annoying and expensive. DONT leave things in your car. And welcome to Humboldt.
