That being said...I don't think this is a big deal. Did the introduction of self-checkouts lower prices?

No, but it has saved me the PITA of having to deal with snotty cashiers.

Sounds like alcohol via u-scan was not a problem, why the change.......ooops, Unions!

Unless I'm in a big hurry (I'm mean BIG hurry) I always use a cashier. The store doesn't pay me enough to do their work for them. Has nothing to do with the technology - I can get through a self-check faster than most people I see using them. It has everything to do with customer service.

It's such a simple technology to use too, and many people seem genuinely stumped and intimidated by it, which is OK with me because it means fewer people are the self-checkout lines.

Unless the law has drastically changed, purchasing alcohol at the machine only requires an employee to come over to check your ID and punch in a few codes. The alcohol can be then be self-checkouted with all the other items. It's very easy.

I must have bad luck because when I use the self-check out line I get stuck behind people who have no idea how to use them and are dumbfounded by technology. The clerk has to come and help them with the machine.

The hint some of these perplexed people encounter and don't understand: Just because a self-checkout station doesn't have a light on, doesn't mean it's not ready for use. Have seen many people waiting for one to go green, but that's not necessary.

Went to Fresh and Easy to buy some meat.

Didn't buy alcohol this time, but I did zip through the self-checkout in less than 30 seconds.

I forgot to buy mayonnaise, so I went to a traditional chain supermarket (Stater Bros) on the way back home. Only 2 lines were open. 3 people were ahead of me in my line and it took about 10 minutes for me to pay for a damn jar of mayonnaise.
