On the way back, you can go checkout Mammoth Mountain although it is very early in the season. Devils Postpile is already closed. You'll drive through Bishop and everyone stops as Shat's Bakery like they've never had bread before. Visit Manzanar for it's historic relevance. Then you'll have about 4 hours of desert. If you have a sweet tooth, Nadia Cakes in Palmdale is right off the freeway, they were the winners of Cupcake Wars. Also don't speed through towns, 25 mph means 25 mph.

Be careful driving through Yosemite. Some very curvy roads up in those mountains and valleys.

I don't think it's snowing hard there right now, which is probably a good thing.

Tioga Pass (Hwy 120 through Yosemite) is closed right now due to snow, but it looks like they haven't given up on re-opening it at some point soon-ish. Other passes are open, including Sonora Pass (Hwy 108)....you'll probably want to check the Caltrans website before going anywhere.

Sources: Caltrans Winter Driving Tips Mountain Pass Closures has the seasonal closures,
http://www.dot.ca.gov/hq/roadinfo/Hourly has current conditions.

It looks great! Looks like it'll take you through the Owens Valley. If not, be sure to include that on your route. Breathtaking scenery in the high Sierra!

Tioga Road is usually closed all winter, sometimes into June.

Winter storms can come up quickly this time of year. Check with C
AL TRans

Road Conditions

I hope you have good winter tires & possibly 4x4. I would carry some chains if it was me. I have traveled in snow most of my life. Carry some

warm clothes
extra socks
long johns
warm water proof boots
mountain man hat which covers your ears (warm)
gloves
sleeping bags
food & plenty of water
charged cell phone
emergency beacon
flares
good full sized spare tire
etc etc

You want to be prepared if you were to get stuck out in the boonies.

Be Safe...

I don't know which one gave me a panic attack more. Yosemite or Big Sur...... Ugh I hate heights.
