Hi all, I'm new here and seeking some advice from those who live or may have lived in Humboldt County, California.

Recently, I read an article in Log Home Design Magazine on the Top Ten Places to live. They go as follows:

Door County, Wisconsin

Brown County, Indiana

Shenandoah County, Virginia

Calhoun County, South Carolina

Gillespie County, Texas

Cochise County, Arizona

Grafton County, New Hampshire

St. Lawrence County, New York

Bonner County, Idaho

Humboldt County, California

I have seriously considered Humboldt as a place to build, but recent research has led to further consideration. (Second to Humboldt, Bonner County, Idaho would be the choice); However, it's not totally my choice (I'd would probably just move to MT.) But my finance would like to live close to the ocean.

So, just a few questions...(thanks in advance)

1. Is it true that Humboldt is loaded with hippies, numerous homeless people, pot growers, low-life's etc. ?

2. Does it rain most of the time?

3. What about mold - I really dislike mold - does it grow like crazy there? (It sure does in Florida)

4. It's stunning beautiful, right?

I currently live in Florida; it's a nice place to live and all but a little too much traffic and people for my taste.

Yeah, it seems like a place with so much natural beauty, a temperate climate, semi-close to the Bay Area, and relatively inexpensive by CA standards would be seeing more economic development.

I'm sure one day people will look at a map and see it's potential

To the original poster (dcm667), this recent discussion thread may answer some of your questions:

Nice/Safe Place to Live near Humboldt State Univ?

Tip: you can use the advanced search feature at the top of the page to search for discussions on different places. You may find it helpful to read through the archives of all of the places you're considering in addition to posting questions in the relevant subforums.

It goes without saying that you should make sure you put boots on the ground before moving anywhere you are considering. I personally would not move somewhere because of some "list" in a magazine. Those sorts of lists are usually pretty useless, except as a very vague starting point.

Good luck with your move!

Humboldt is a place on the rise, IMO. They are finally investing in the public amenities that will spur private development - they're building a waterfront bike path from Eureka to Arcata, and a large swath of forest south of Eureka is slowly becoming public parkland. Both of these will make it much more of a destination for "active lifestyle" types.
