This is the Berlin Wall of dividing lines for those considering moving to California:
Want or have kids? Probably don't want to move to California.

Single or Childless, (DINKs)? California is great.

Wow, you really have a negative opinion of NC! Where in NC did you live? I have heard many positive things about that state and am interested in hearing about the area you lived in.

That is a good point.
Where I live, I can go for a bike ride just about any time I want. I've even done it in the rain when I know it's going to be a light rain. A light rain in Los Angeles is very light. Barely gets the streets wet.

Last night I went for a walk at 10:30 PM when it was still a relatively mild 62 degrees. The longer I live here, the more spoiled I get! Any daytime winter maximum temperature under 60 degrees irritates me!

I think that the Great Wall of Divide is mostly about money. I think that if you have money, you can live comfortably anywhere that you wish, with or without children.

Depends on the area. Mission Viejo is the safest city in America and has fantastic schools. If that is a bad place for kids, I'd like to know a good place. I personally wouldn't raise kids in SF or LA, but I wouldn't raise them in NY city either. And although California is expensive, it isn't nearly as expensive as some suggest. Most elite parts of many cities are at least as expensive if not more expensive than the safe family areas of california.

Default CA is my home, I just don't live there anymore.

You may be right. I grew up in CA lived there until my early forties. Since then have lived in Oklahoma (ugh!), northern New Mexico (v. nice), and now Philadelphia (mixed feelings). No matter where I live, I'm missing CA. May try to move back in a year or so. Housing costs make it a hard decision.

Hi Lukeache,

I'm originally from the south. The military sent me to California in 1977 and I've been here ever since. I started off in the south Bay area and now live outside of Sacramento. After living for the last 30 years in California, I've decided that I've had enough of this state. The major metropolitan areas in California have a high overall cost of living. The state is crowded with more and more people moving in each year. Illegal alien immigration is out of control. This costs taxpayers billions of dollars each year. The corrupt politicians ignore this problem because they fear they will lose the hispanic vote if they try to do something about it. Many of the politicians are "Looney Tunes," especially in San Francisco. The freeways are a nightmare. Everyone is so much in a hurry that courteous drivers are few and far between. Property taxes are high. My goal is to leave California as soon as I can retire.

If you are looking for better weather that you are experiencing in Minnesota, you WILL find better weather here in California. I have to admit that I do like the weather here. California is a beautiful state, but the weather and the beauty of the state is not enough to keep me here.

You can have California "A" weather or maybe find somewhere else with "B+" weather for half the cost. Consider the trade off. At least you wouldn't have Minnesota "D-" weather.

I have lived in CA all my life. We live in the San Joaquin Valley and it's okay, but we have LOTS of smog and HIGH HIGH HIGH housing cost. We use to have decent housing cost and our town use to be a good medium size town. Now it's becoming similar to a little L.A. My husband I liked the smallness of our town and now that it's going away we want out. There can be lots to do, but CA is really expensive. I would say it's not worth it! It all depends on what you are really looking for! Good Luck!

I agree. I want a child and I want to raise my child in California. I'm trying to get pregnant now but I don't want my baby born in Texas!!!! I really don't.

The area I will be moving to in CA has all Blue Ribbon schools (no need for private schools), lots of stuff for kids and families to do and is a very safe area. 25 to 30 minutes from Malibu. Disneyland not to far away. Snow in the mountains not to far away for winter sports. Hawaii close, just a 5 hour flight away. Zoos and museums. Great weather and NO FIRE ANTS so the child can sit and play in the grass.
