I did not notice what type of work you were expecting, if that makes a differance in where you live. But you may want to check out a town called San Luis Obispo. Halfway between SF and LA. Big enough to have culture-small enough to not own a car. PERFECT WEATHER!

So, it seems that it's back to the drawing board...

Are there any other places in CA where you can get by without a car, have warm weather, pay cheap rent (roommates are fine), further your career (desperately need to; don't want to be doing this entry-level stuff for years), and be around people you can actually talk to? I'm guessing the answer is no... I think I just described some sort of nonexistent college-grad Mecca.

My career is in editing/publishing if that helps. I'm not exactly sure yet where that CA scene is--another thing I need to research. So many factors, argh.

Thanks again, everyone!
Based on what you've decided so far, I'd focus my efforts in LA, were I you. It's a big city with a lot of opportunities for career and living without a car. Next step IMO is for you to start researching the city for an area that fits with your criteria for working and living car free. For starters, look for places to live that are close to the major transit lines, figure out which areas of the city those are and research them. Next, find the companies you might like to work for. Most likely they will be in locations you can commute to by public transpo.

Using public transpo in LA, the problem isn't necessarily getting TO work that's the issue. The issue is that people often don't live near enough transit stops and train stations to make using public transpo convenient. IOW, the problem is getting between home and the transit heads that's often the tricky part. Solve that part of the equation by living close to transit and trains. Ideally, you'd live close to work, but that's not always an option. However, if you're in the editing/publishing field, maybe telecommuting could work out for you.
