Can't say that I would ever move back to the Central Valley, in fact I loathe visiting there, but that's just me. It works for some folks or there wouldn't be as many there. IMO, four seasons is better than the ocean, clean air superceeds a fast food joint. Both my husband and I have great jobs, love the weather and are never bored
I truly think it's a matter of to each his/her own
How about the price of housing? What kind of value do you get compared to California? Schools? Traffic? How do they compare?

Overall the trend seems to be people leaving big CA cities to live in small, practically rural small towns because of the low cost-of-living. No amount of research can prepare you from making a move like that. It is a huge cultural upheaval and will change everything about how you live your life.
I could never give up my career for a big house in the middle of nowhere. I have worked way to hard to trade it all in. Many people appear to be attempting to take an 'early retirement' in their prime earning years. I have a feeling in 5 or 10 years a lot of those people are going to be struggling when they realize the job opportunities in small-town America will not sustain a middle-class lifestyle, no matter how big the house is. There is a reason cities are so big and crowded, and it's not because of all the great ethnic restaurants - it's the jobs.
If I was going to leave San Diego (which might happen someday) it would be to a bigger city with higher salaries and more opportunities, like NYC or LA or DC or whatever. The time to downsize and move to a small-town is retirement. When you are young and able, you bust your ass wherever the opportunities are, and you suck up high costs of housing to make the big bucks.
Go to small-town America and ask a high school grad if he plans to stay around for his career. Odds are they want nothing more than to get the hell out of there and move to a big city somewhere... that's going to be your kids too. It might make more sense to concentrate on making more money where you are than to give it all up for a big house.

if they did not sell the house, its a brillant move. if they did its a one way trip to rent landia. mexican people have an expression. mejor mal conocido que por el bueno a conocer. roughly speaking means, better the people you know that have flaws than standing on tippi toe with glee about the "wonderful" people you are about to meet.

California is no different than any place else. I'm from the Midwest and when I lived there I knew so many people that moved away but were home again in a year or two. Other places may look tempting but what is home is home for some folks.

Housing here is just on the rise and about a 20 year inventory on new homes as they were doing a huge amount of building, there are some builders that are going to be at a big loss. We bought an existing home in 2002, 3 bed, 1 bath, 1100 sq ft (don't need any more than that for two people
) with a good sized front and back yards for right around $70,000. When we purchased the roof had just been replaced, new vinyl siding, new vinyl windows, basically it had been flipped has the cabinets are all new as well as the carpet and other flooring. Excellent neighborhood with the exception that I fear we might no longer be able to enjoy living in an unicorporated area as new subdivisions are going up all around us and we might be pulled into an actual city
Schools, no concern to us as we've no school aged children. However there are both public and private schools which I've heard good things about.
Traffic is sadly picking up in comparison to what it was when we moved here. Major gridlock is on the 4th of July
Otherwise when the roads are prime, can still get across town in less than 15 minutes.
We never even looked to buy in CA. Had married in '90 and left in '91. Had we stayed there's no telling what I'd be doing as the company I was at then is no longer, in fact being here I'm able to be in the line of work I enjoy, animals.

Half the people that live in Fayetteville, Ark. & Bentonville, Ark. in Northwest Arkansas seem to be California transplants.

Well I moved out of California 3 months ago to Alabama. I'm still waiting for this homesickness that is supposed to strike, or for all the reasons I'm supposed to hate Alabama. I'm even still living in a tiny apartment with my family of 4 waiting for my house to be built, I even went to California for Thanksgiving, and I STILL am not feeling homesick or like Alabama sucks. In fact as soon as I drove away from the Santa Ana airport I looked at the freeways and thought, "DAMN. This is a CRAZY number of cars." The magnitude of the population and the traffic there really had never struck me until I had been away from it for a couple months (which I never had.)
Then again, I do think Sassberto hit the nail on the head with people moving out to these practically rural towns. I couldn't do that. On the Alabama forums, there were a few disgruntled transplants that warned me "Don't do it!" - but you know, each and every one of them lived in some little town in the middle of nowhere, couldn't fit into the culture there, and missed the amenities of a city.
I live in a mid-sized city, with transplants from all over. No, it's not as diverse as California, but it's diverse enough. I have all the restaurants, shopping, and conveniences I could possibly care about. I shop at Target, I get my bagels and lox at franchise bagel shop, and a cup of latte from Starbuck's. There are hobby shops, museums, restaurants, live performances, etc. In our short time here, my kids have seen live children's theater, the botanical gardens, as well as a visit to a real working farm. It's not Hollywood but frankly, who really needs to be THAT entertained all the time? We can go to Disneyland and the El Capitan when were visiting family in California.
Also by choosing Alabama, I didn't choose a place with a drastically different climate. Sure, there's more weather, but it's not like I went to live in Nebraska with the blizzards. It's basically a moderate climate with lots and lots of really nice days. As many perfectly nice days as California? Nope, but enough of them, year round, to enjoy my surroundings. I think it'd be a MUCH more difficult adjustment to live someplace with snow on the ground for 6 months. I know Charles has been happy in Colorado, but I know other Californians who found it to be a much more difficult adjustment (even some of those who ultimately DID adjust and were happy after a few years.)
Even when it comes to smaller decisions, I try to be realistic. At first sight, I was in LOVE with the homes here in Alabama that are perched on the mountains in a forest of trees. I really thought I wanted one of those homes. Then I did my reality check: what was this house going to be like with kids and the 3 flights of stairs that are necessary when you build a house on a freakin' hillside? Could my kids safely ride their tricycles down the precipitous driveway of death? Does poison ivy grow back there? Are there many other kids in the neighborhood? How much of a pain in the ass is it going to be to drive through these windy, narrow streets just to buy a gallon of milk? Etc etc. So I bought a house with a practical ranch layout in a neighborhood with lots of kids and safe, flat sidewalks, close to the supermarket. It's not my fantasy, but I had to consider the reality because in the end, it's a happy reality that makes me a happy person, not a happy fantasy.

I get that feeling every time I come home to OC. Its like I can feel my blood pressure rise just getting out of the parking lot. And I swear I see more a**hole drivers in the 5 miles back home from the airport than I see in a week of driving around Denver or Austin.

It is all relative to what you are used to.
After living in Miami and New York City, driving in OC is a dream. If I honk in OC, I swear people have heart-attacks.. on the East Coast honking is just part of the ambient noise.
They must be really nice drivers in Austin and Denver.
