Also, Fortuna might be an option to consider....'sunny fortuna'-it's said to receive more sun than the other towns in the region.

When I first started looking, I thought Fortuna may work because it cost less. It is too far inland so the weather is too variable, and really, I think too far from the resources of the city(well, Eureka is the city of the area, lol). From my research, I need to stay within 10 to 15 miles of the coast. I am trying to avoid major temp swings between the daily high and low. Also need to avoid temp extremes in either direction.

I don't consider it cold where you are, especially after the winter in my current region! Even the deep south got ice and snow, and I am mid-south.

The high crime rate and recent murder did make me think of the fictional Cabot Cove, lol.

Pelican, I do think I would like Eureka best, but still have the little one and hubby to think of. My son will likely not be going with us, unless he goes to college there, but I think he is joining the Air Force instead. College kids own the world, in their mind anyway, lol. I can picture the crowding and annoyance of jaywalkers that you paint.

Owl, That sounds like a good school! I have not seen low ratings on any north of Arcata Bay. Really the only red warning rated school was that one elementary... had to ask if anyone had a personal explanation.

I really do consider 30 minutes away from the city part of the area too far out. I learned this the hard way after buying our first house in a country suburb and then being diagnosed with MS after having a baby. Rural was nice until then but after buying we were stuck for awhile. I know my needs now, even if they clash with my wants.

lrmsd, my only concern with charter schools is getting in. My sister's kids went to charter school in OKC and one almost did not make the list.

I have found many dream homes, most waaayyy out of my price range like this "castle" on the beach, lol! Fun to looky loo and daydream sometimes though.
2660 Kelly Ave, Mckinleyville, CA 95519 is For Sale - Zillow

I have found many that seem a bit too reasonable in pricing as well, too good to be true so have to wonder what is wrong! 3207 Albee St, Eureka, CA 95503 is For Sale - Zillow and 931 15th Street, Eureka CA - Trulia

Also, it seems the entire street of Lee Lane in Humboldt Hill is either for sale or foreclosed.

Sidewalks are a bonus for me, as long as they are maintained. Some way to get where I need to go if I can't drive, by either walking, bicycle, or getting there on my hover round! I am sometimes wheelchair bound, it is one of the reasons I want to be so close to resources, but when I am not I like to run for all it is worth! Hate running on treadmills though, and look forward to temperatures I can run outside anytime.

Eureka1, I have been reading your posts on this area since 2009 or 2010, I have gained much from them and thank you for reiterating some of it on my thread.

Hi Kat,

Since you mentioned your diagnosis, I wanted to suggest you check to make sure you will have what you need medically nearby. Somewhere on this forum is the link to the North Coast Journal article on the difficulties Humboldt has on recruiting doctors/medical staff and retaining them. The caseload for docs/specialists is very high in Humboldt. I think maybe you should read that. If you can't find it in the archive here or at the NCJ site, let me know and I'll dig it out. The Bay Area is more than 4 hours by car.

This may also influence where you pick in Humboldt, with Eureka having much more to offer medically I think.

Cheers and Good Luck!

I was actually thinking of starting a thread asking about this place Humboldt Neurological Medical Group, Eureka, CA / Links Or if folks had any other neuro recommendations.

Two of their doctors recently retired, kind of proves your point.

I did see a some posts here about doctors being scarce for some things but did not remember specifics.

Hi Kat, here's the article: Come Hither, Dear Doc | News | The Journal

Doesn't pertain to your specific situation but will give you some general info. I clicked on your link and noticed a support group... that would be a great source of info...

That Albee St house is only a 2/1, those are always cheaper. I only had one experience with Humboldt Neurological and it was ten years ago. I had an industrial injury and was referred for testing. The doctor I saw wrote me a prescription for Lipitor and I obediently took it over to COSTCO to be filled. They wanted $87 whereas I was used to paying $5 or so for meds so I refused it and called Hum Neurological. They had a different doctor write me an Rx for a generic for $5 and I've been taking it happily with the blessing of my primary ever since. The doc was very new at the time and I was impressed with their responsiveness.
There's one specialty that you have to leave town for, sorry I can't recall but if it's not in the article that Pelican referred you to maybe the medical society would know. The main drawback with so few medical providers is that there are only two , St Joe's which is Catholic and will not perform abortions and Mad River which doesn't have that good a rep although I hear they have improved a lot. A lot of folks go to Red Bluff or the Bay Area for major operations. I had a hip replacement at St Joe's and lived to tell the tale although I was very unimpressed with the hospital, VERY impressed with the staff. Fortuna is a cute little town but 20 miles one way is too far for me to spend gas unless I really have some reason to go there. One of the reason s I moved back to Eureka was that no place in town is more than ten minutes drive time from anyplace else in town and I was fleeing the nightmare 90 minute commutes in Hawaii. Congratulations on doing research before you move. Lots of people aren't that smart.

Hi Kat, here's something else to check out... quite illuminating in a weird way: Let's All Figure Out What Eureka's Neighborhoods Are | Lost Coast Outpost | Humboldt County

Follow the link to the maps... there's at least a dozen now... and click on the various portions to town to see the comments.

Lots of fun with those links!

I must admit, the one with the doctor story made me laugh. I guess I am a little weird, showed my husband and said, there is your high sex offense crime rate. If I had been there I probably would have tried not to laugh while ignoring it and diverting my daughter's attention, but would not have been a deal breaker.

The only concerning thing to me about the Humboldt Neurology clinic is that it seems to be the only neuro game in the area? I have already contacted some doctors for appointments when I come over for my scouting trip, only found 2 primary care places, is that correct also?

Our last move, I ended up going back to old docs in another state until I could get in with new ones, so no, not that smart. I just learned from the experience, especially since we won't be only a few hours drive away this time, lol.

I can't imagine a 90 minute commute on a small island, but it is another thing my husband tells me about. He lived there before also.

I am going to have fun looking at those maps now! It will be interesting to see how many neighborhoods folks break down a few square mile area into.

Thanks again to you both!

Everyone following both this thread and the earthquake threads of late (and the recent 6.9 earthquake off Eureka) might appreciate this user created map: An Anonymous Eureka Map | Lost Coast Outpost | Humboldt County

You have to click on the blue markers to see the map maker's comments to see what I mean.

It made me chuckle but it is oh so true :-)

No, I am not the one who created it!
