Santa barbara is like in the 70s every day, while in LA, the temperature can come up to 100 degrees.

Why is that? It's like an hour drive to LA, and there is that much difference?

The answer is the ocean. The closer you are to the ocean, the cooler you will be, especially with an ocean breeze. LA will warm up with off-shore winds (Santa Anas), while Santa Barbara will sometimes warm up with the Sundowner winds.

SB to LA is at least a 2 hour drive from LA and probably 3 hours with the traffic. Anyway, there are parts of LA that are similar to SB in climate, such as Santa Monica, Redondo, etc. The 100 degree parts of LA are inland, in the valleys. As the previous poster said, it's the proximity to the ocean. Santa Monica stays pretty cool year around, while a place such as Woodland Hills or Pasadena gets very hot during the summer.

Much of LA county is closer to the coast than Los Angeles city.

Long Beach, Manhattan Beach, Huntington Beach come to mind as cool, sea-breezy parts of LA county.

While the answer definitely is the ocean, the North Pacific current (Sometimes referred to as the California current) is deflected away from the coastline, just above Santa Barbara, so the water temp is warmer south of Santa Barbara.

What you wrote is not completely accurate.

Temperatures in LA beach areas and SB are nearly identical.

Meanwhile, temperatures in Santa Ynez and the San Fernando Valley are similar.

And temperatures in New Cuyama and Riverside are similar.
