One will NEVER stumble across a marijuana grow under the redwoods. Marijuana requires full sun which is not provided under the redwoods. Also, the vast majority of redwoods are in state parks or private property. A large percent of the marijuana grown outdoors is done east of HWY 101 at a higher elevation, where redwoods do not grow.
Most native growers grow on their own land or other private property. The cartel grow in areas so remote, there is little chance that someone will stumble upon it.
That is not the true picture of Marijuana growing in Humboldt County and the rest of the Emerald Triangle.

Like the guy says: "If the federal government ended prohibition, I wouldn't be talking to you right now."

Would be nice if they could stop these guys from chopping down trees to clear room for illegal grows.

I'd rather this not turn into a debate about marijuana so I'll just say this about it: if you don't want it, don't seek it out. Don't associate with sketchy people, and stay out of sketchy places and you'll be fine. Stay on designated trails when hiking, and get out of any grow you stumble upon ASAP. But honestly if you stay on the trails your chance of stumbling into a grow is pretty much nil.

That said, I'd like to switch gears and post about some fun things we did over the past couple of days. On Friday we went to Trinidad Arts Night where they had music, free food, free wine, and lots of great art. It's the busiest I've seen Trinidad since we've moved here and it was really nice.

Today we went to the botanical gardens for their spring sale and got a couple of plants (admission was free though it usually isn't), went out to the wildflower exhibit over in Manila, and then Arts Alive in Eureka. The weather was fabulous all day, and it was fun doing all that stuff.

DCMann2, thank you for you very informative post! Did you happen to mention that most of Crescent City is in a flood plain, and that the city was decimated by a tsunami in 1964 after the huge earthquake in Alaska? (I thought of this as I was trying to go to sleep in a hotel along Highway 101 right across from the harbor!)

I'd also be very concerned at the lack of health care specialists. Here is an article that I posted on C-D a few months ago; there is only one kidney specialist, and that doctor has over 800 patients!

I wish I could live there; we went on vacation to that area last August, and it was beautiful.

Lol....in all those pictures, there are pictures of grows, pictures of redwoods, but NO pictures of grows under redwoods. There are giant greenhouses, but those are not under the redwoods. And greenhouses are for full sun. The location of those green houses are not in the redwoods either.

I have yet to read the articles, but I do know this, the majority of the writers only spoke to people and visited the area, they have not lived in it for over 20 years. Seriously, who is the one to listen to? A reporter or a person who has lived it?

Everything needs to have 'entertainment' and 'shock' value in order to get peoples attention. Just because it is written in a newspaper and magazine that is sold does not make it more accurate than a first hand account.

I don't want to make a big issue of marijuana either, but the 'scary' stuff people are spouting off is non-sense.
I'm not saying that everything being said is untrue, it is just not to the intensity that it is being presented.

Bottom line.....if you want to move to someplace within the Emerald Triangle, do let the marijuana industry keep you from doing so. There is really nothing to worry about.

.
I lived in Mendo Co for 25 years. Ukiah for 12. Not much country in Willits or Laytonville or Ukiah that is solid redwood forest. Growers are everywhere. Those places. Along the Hwy 101 corridor. Covelo road, Orr Springs road and Low Gap road. Hopland, you name it. Truth be told Mendocino Co. is Pot City.

My ex buddies live off Sherwood road and do grow much. Please give an accurate picture of life in the North Coast. Dope growing is everywhere. If you don't care for the Marijuana culture don't move to the NW part of CA

Great job with your thread..!

We love the region... Say maybe 4 miles in from the coast around Mendocino/Caspar. Pure heaven.

Almost moved there. But the hospital is struggling in Fort Bragg a bit to much for us... I am self employed, but the wife needs the hospital to stay alive.
By the way, best we can tell both Mendo and Fort Bragg schools are just fine to better than fine.. Great bunch of kids. Great dedicated staff....

Thanks for the great link to all that info & photos! I did hear back from the Housing Authority in Eureka via email and they said they are not "absorbing" Section 8 vouchers from other areas now. (Very strange; never heard that before). Oh well, I doubt they have the medical care I need, and I'd be desperate for transportation to Redding to get it, where its hot as hell!

Thank you again.
