For all the Californians on this forum --- if you were to leave California, where would you go and why?

The lifestyle California offers is hard to beat (weather, natural beauty, outdoors, active lifestyle, entertainment options, great cities, destinations)...but it comes at a high price. If you were to move somewhere cheaper, where would it be?

I've listed several places that seem to draw a lot of Californians each year.... just curious to put this to a poll and see what the favorites would be and why. Would love your comments!

The part of California I live in is already affordable. Nearby Sacramento is a less expensive city than Seattle or Portland. You can't generalize the entire state by a narrow coastal strip (although almost everyone does).

I've lived in Cali all my life, but I can't stay here. The state has become overrun with extremists. The central valley is being killed by people who treasure a small fish more than human life. Though we have millions of conservative, our vote hasn't counted in decades.

I'm moving to AZ or TX very soon. Fourth generation Californian being driven out by eastern migrants, and SF idiocy.

Exclamation That would be Medford,OR

Though it doesn't have a fraction as much to do[or the population] as San Diego, my first choice, my second choice is Medford,OR, in southern Oregon, about 30 min from the CA border. I could not stand 9 months of the dreary/drizzly days of Portland or Seattle, even though otherwise their temps would be fine, and everywhere else gets too hot or too cold. Medford has way more sunny days than those cities,117 days compared to 68-Portland,71-Seattle. [SD-at- 147] is best. No sales tax in OR ,either!

Weather Today - Weather Forecasts, Radar, Maps for 1000s of US and World Cities

We're after a better climate to enjoy being outside in year round, and lots of things to do/see,without having to drive in crappy/dangerous weather to get there!

The Rougue River Valley also offers EYE-CANDY scenery!

I'd move to one of three places... Barcelona, Spain; Sydney, Australia, or Auckland, New Zealand. They're all on the sea and have beautiful locales. Also, the weather wouldn't be a shock to my system as I'm quite acclimated to the Bay Area.

you are asking 2 different questions: 1-what city is the most like CA? That is very hard to say, I did vote for Portland, but Austin might make the list. That being said there is no place like most of California. This isn't a plus or minus, just a fact. Austin is the most liberal city in Texas, still it isn't like some places in California. Now, where would some like to live if they left CA? That is another question. Believe it or not, there are a lot of people that are not blindly in love with CA like you seem to be. And there are those who leave because they want to get away from some of the problems or the life styles in California. Of course this has a lot to do with where in Ca one lives. Los Angeles is nothing like San Francisco. Sacramento is nothing like Eureka and Chico is nothing like San Diego.

You mention places like DFW area. A lot of people in CA move to the area each year, but the DFW metro area is nothing like CA, nor is Denver like most of CA. The same with Phoenix.

Austin is nothing like Cali. Trying hard to understand why Californians keep flocking here in droves. I think the DFW and Houston are far better matches.

Portland and Seattle are very "SF Bay Area" like according to friends who have made the move there (after being priced out of San Francisco).

I don't think any of the cities on your list replicate Los Angeles or OC.

if you're thinking of Seattle to beat the cost of SF you better hurry. I just read rents in parts of downtown areas of Seattle are now higher than the Mission district. I think it was $2250 for a one bedroom.

That and no sun most the year. Winning combination. If you're a rich mole.
