So I got a decent job in the oil industry and I'm looking to move to California somewhere. I know nothing about california place wise execpt L.A and huntington beach but those are pretty expensive.

I'm looking for a cheap place to rent, safe neighborhood and relatively close by the beach. Maybe even close to L.A since that's where a lot of things go down from what i can tell.

Any neighborhood suggestions?

Also I'm 20 years old.

So are about 80 million other people. If there were cheap, safe neighborhoods close to the beach, everyone would be living in CA. "Cheap" near the beach in CA means about $1500 for a one bedroom and well over $2k for two bedrooms, unless you move somewhere like Oxnard or Long Beach but there goes the whole "safe neighborhood" part.

We really need a sticky thread called "You are dreaming" for people who have never been to CA wanting cheap places close to the beach with a safe neighborhood, great schools and a walkable downtown lol

Offshore oil rig near New Orleans. I'll be flying in and out every month or so. I'm not saying right on the beach... was thinking 10-30 minutes away drive.

Have you considered a share? Try the San Diego Forum because it seems they know about a number of affordable beach, or beach-close, options for young people who may not mind "roughing it" a bit (small, crowded, and noisy places including some with roomies that may not be up to par for a 25+older group).

What do you mean? Like share with someone else? I mean i was thinking before i find a place to ask around facebook if anybody wants to move to Cali or whatever. I know a few people who might want to. I'll check that forum out though.

You might want to get a better plan together. CA is one of the most expensive states in the country and you are talking about prime areas that are even more expensive. Its not just something you put up on a Facebook page asking who's down to move to "Cali" LOL. You need a VERY well paying job and money to spend if you want to be close to the beach in a nice neighborhood. Unless you are making north of $80k a year, forget it. I would suggest you at least visit first.

Yes, a lot of young people in SoCal share housing expenses with a roommate, or two. I don't know how they go about it; whether Craig's List is the best way, or what?

You could also ask that question while at the SD Forum, even though shares are very common throughout the entire region.

I don't have a family, and i won't be driving my car very much. Like i said... I'll be out in the seas for about 28 days. I mean with the money I'll be making splitting around a $1,200 renting bill wouldn't be a problem for me. But I'm sure not everybody would be comfortable paying around $600 with a regular job.

Honestly the only thing I'll be most likely paying for is the rent... and saving up the rest. And food for 14 days while I'm back. That's literally it.

But yes... i do need to figure out the plan a bit better. Maybe i should move to Miami instead since it's closer to home. But I've always wanted to live in Cali

I don't know, but $600 sounds really cheap, even for a roommate situation, but ask on the SD Forum before giving up completely on CA. Maybe you could get two roommates. Then again, Florida might be better for you.
