It's pretty sad when people making $100k can't even afford to rent a place.

Considering the median is around $107K, and many make more than that.

A lot of recent grads do not mind moving to the Valley, because they have situations that make it work out for them. Pet friendly not being one of those, so single 22 year old with no pets okay maybe a goldfish then a studio apartment is not a big deal or rooming with a group of people which is a hot trend all over the country.

For people who are said to be so creative and innovative...it defies logic that they can't figure out how to put a roof over their heads on a six-figure salaries. Plenty of us in SV get it done on a fraction of that, and we certainly aren't qualified to work at Google.

It's not that they must, it's because they can.

From the sound of the article, it seems those Google employees could have afforded to rent somewhere, but they just chose to live on campus because.... they can get away with it.

Heck, if my place of employment allows me to get away with doing it, and if I was still young and single, I'd do it too!

If could save money on rent, why do it when I would probably never be home in the first place? Don't those people work like 10-12 hour days?

If any of you have ever been to the Google Campus in Mountain View, it has the feel of a college dorm, or university campus. It is unlike any office environment I have ever seen. Long hours are the norm, especially during project deadlines.

Living in a van down by the river is what happens when one fails miserably in life, not when one gains a dream job.

Could not disagree more. Living in a van by the river, or on a boat IN the river, is transcendence out of the suffering of the vacuous, pointless, material plain.

I'd love to live on a house boat on one of the canals in London or Amsterdam but I don't remember seeing too many canals in SV last time I was there.
