Anyone remember KDIA, Jumpin' George? KOBY Radio? KYA? The Doggie Diner? The afternoon Oakland Tribune? Waiting in the car to catch the ferry before the completion of the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge. The Oakland Oaks and the PCL. Bob Sherwood, what was the name of his early TV-Talk/variety show? The dance party on KPIX. The Saturday dance party show with kids from all over the Bay Area.

Not reading through the whole thread so if I repeat any, sorry. These are mainly Berkeley and Oakland oriented.

Liberty House in Oakland

Hinks in Berkeley

CO-OP (remember these for those of you from the Berkeley area? there were only three of them)

The Saw Mill with Marty Sherman. Does that still exist?

The Santa Fe train that went down the middle of Sacramento st. in Berkeley

Emeryville was an abandoned wasteland

The Serramonte Ford jingle: "we wanna be your car dealer at Serramonte Ford

One of my favs. "Pete Ellis Dodge, 1095 west El Camino Real Sunnyvale" (Although he had this exact same jingle with different words for a dealership in Bellflower)

KPIX had Dave Mackelhatten and Wendy Tacuta (sp? on those)

"It's it" ice cream sandwhiches. Do they still make those?

OMG, I sang on the Saw Mill jingle, "You need it, we got it, all at The Saw Mill!"

Are there any Dairy Belles left?

What about Jolly's?

I think they are all kaput.

However, there is at least one Foster's Freeze left (in Menlo Park).

As far as I know the Foster's Freeze in Milpitas is still open. I haven't been in that part of town for a few months.

Is anyone here "of a certain age" (ahem...) who might recall the name of any of the dance clubs the were west of 880 on Broadway from the late 1960's?

If not, ask your parents, OK?

(Oh, and we used to call 880 "The Nimitz".)

Default Memories of Half-A-Century

Gone, but still fresh in my memory of when I was a kid:

• Neldam's Bakery in Oakland (neighborhood now blighted and re-opened as "Taste of Denmark")
• Moos Ice Cream in Richmond
• The Peacock cage in Richmond park on MacDonald Ave., across from Moos
• The Bird Cages in SunValley Shopping Center in Concord
• The Skating Rink also in SunValley
• The Giant Insects and Plants Fountain also in SunValley (destroyed by a fatal small plane crash)
• SunValley Cinemas in the Mall
• SunValley Food court with the sculpted metal trees
• Hooper's Chocolates in Oakland
• Rhode's Fish 'n' Chips in San Pablo (owned by my father's friend Jeff Pratty)
• The original McDonald's walk-up in San Pablo
• The Skating Rink in Hilltop Shopping Center, Richmond
• Phair's (clothing and gifts) in Orinda
• Kirby's Restaurant in El Cerrito Plaza
• McPhee’s Junior Bootery in El Cerrito Plaza
• Capwell's Department Store in El Cerrito Plaza and at Hilltop in Richmond
• Woolworth's in El Cerrito Plaza
• Newberry's Department Store in San Pablo
• Adachi's Nursery in Richmond (The really big one with all the Christmas ornaments each year)
• Alpha Beta Groceries in Richmond on San Pablo Ave. (later renamed Lucky's)
• Doggie Diners throught the Bay Area
• Ken's Nursery in San Pablo
• Montgomery Ward's Department Store in Richmond
• Marine World in Redwood City (before "Africa USA" was added)
• Frontier Village in San Jose
• Royal Jersey Dairy Drive-Thru in San Pablo
• The Copper Penny Restaurant in El Cerrito (now a Nations Giant location)
• The Sandpiper cards and gifts in Pinole
• B. Daulton Books at Hilltop in Richmond
• Original Children's Fairyland in Oakland on Lake Merrit
• The Nut Tree restaurant in Vacaville (I-80 on the way to Sacramento)
• The Milk Farm restaurant in Dixon (I-80 on the way to Sacramento)
• Mr. Mopp's Toy Shop in Berkeley (now rebulit and open again!)
• Sally Stanford's Valhallah Restaurant in Sausalito
• Dominic's Restaurant in San Rafeal
• The Richmond Independent newspaper

I was raised in Richmond, then Pinole.

Not sure if everyone was aware, The Oasis is open again. But it's a Trans/Cross dressing oriented gathering and entertainment spot now. Not a "New Wave" / alt club. But who knows. Now that it's gone from an abandoned, peed on, graffiti covered eyesore back to a real club, lots of additional things can happen. If it's successful there may be cool events there.

Regarding "The Great Entertainer" that was / is actually a mini-chain. There is still one in San Mateo, on El Camino just south of Hwy 92.
