Hello,

I got a job interview in Napa coming up, and just want to think ahead a little since that's always fun! My wife and I would be coming from the Northeast. We plan to start a family soon, so a house with a yard and good schools would be important. My commute would hopefully be around 1/2 hour or less by car - it would be a bonus if I can occasionally ride my bicycle to work. My wife would be staying home but she would like to make occasional trips out to San Francisco, so if we can keep her commute to be at most 1.5 hours that would be nice.

Our budget would be around $500K. We would want a pretty nice home around >2000 square feet in a safe/friendly neighborhood if that's doable. I'd like a place where my future kids can just hang around in the yard with the dog without any safety concerns. I've read about Fairfield and it seems like that may not be the kind of place I'm looking for (according to the threads I saw on this forum). Vacaville looks more promising but according to Redfin, the schools do not seem that great.

Do you have any recommendations for us?

Thanks.

Fairfield is a little far (I call it FarField) given your bicycle thing.

Sonoma is nice. Reverse commute to Napa. And our wine is better!

Vallejo, American Canyon, Benecia.

I forget the order of towns north of Napa. Rutherford? Yountville?

Anything in Napa valley is going to be pricey. Vallejo is least expensive but everyone I know who has bought in Vallejo regrets it.

As a cyclist, you should be aware that the roads from anyplace to Napa are not cyclist friendly. Narrow, little in the way of shoulders, and filled with crazy drivers who may not take cognizance of you.

I've lived in this area for over 20 years and I love it. You will too. Just keep your eyes open.

Why must you both commute? What's wrong with the Napa area?

I have to agree with this. Why are there so many people asking questions about living someplace other than the city they are going to be working in? Commuting sucks. For every hour you spend on the road, it's less time you are home with family, friends or engaging in hobbies. Not to mention the gasoline you use and wear and tear on the car.
