I will be voting in favor. More responsive government, lower taxes. Chop California.
I'm voting NO so your vote is null and void. Running from the issues won't make them go away.

That said a reasonable partition scheme would probably have a year to say five years run up in which revenues would be more and more earmarked for the future state they originated in so budgeting could be brought in line with likely initial revenues as well as providing general funding for concerns as you have raised. It wouldn't be like the Civil War where folks just said we're done as of right now,
But you overlook the fact that the *process* of splitting California six ways would be incredibly time-consuming and expensive.

Think of the massive bureaucracy we'd need to set up in order to manage the process of reallocating state resources, renegotiating union and service-provider contracts, etc. -- not to mention the more mundane but also expensive details like having to re-sign all the highways, make everyone get new license plates and driver's licenses -- the list goes on and on.

For example, think of the Pelican Bay State Prison. Since it's located in Jefferson, it stands to reason that Jefferson would take it over. But Jefferson would have a tiny population and tax base and could not support such a huge, expensive prison on its own. Presumably the inmates would be transferred to their 'states' of origin, thus leaving Jefferson with a big, expensive white elephant and a whole lot of unemployed prison guards.

Who exactly benefits from that?

And then think of the many, many years that the breakup process would last. Because, if by some totally unimaginable chance, the measure DID pass, then it would have to make it through Congress and the courts. The time and expense of all the legal wrangling would be mind-boggling, and ultimately the only beneficiaries would be the lawyers.

So we're looking at a decade, at least, of enormous public expenditure -- with no guarantee of success -- and again, it's all so a few plutocrats in the putative state of "Silicon Valley" can stop having to support the rest of the state with their tax dollars.

It's hilarious that so many anti-government types are in favor of this stupid idea, because it would -- in both the short and long run -- create a lot MORE government.

It's especially hilarious that so many conservatives are leaping on board -- when the biggest beneficiaries would be godless commie liberals, like me, who happen to live in the proposed state of Silicon Valley.

This ballot measure won’t pass, but something tells me this “cold sore” ballot measure will come back voting cycle after voting cycle. It seems one can never underestimate the power of stupid people in large numbers. I mean hell someone is going home and watching duck dynasty and swamp people.

Don't forget those bathroom stall toe-tapping republicans who seek to abridge the rights of others with the greatest piece of fiction on hand, a bible. Oh the irony.

This whole split the state up movement proves that people are sheeple that can easily be talked into signing anything with out understanding all the little details behind it. It kind of sounds like ACA.

Southern California has been draining Northern California dry of water, with not the least bit of concern for those areas for years. This is just one of many articles, this one recent, that addresses that fact, as well as the fact that the state is destroying various fishing industries in the North:
The Emptying of Northern California Reservoirs » CounterPunch: Tells the Facts, Names the Names

Regarding Oroville, specifically, from Wikipedia: "The state has not paid any taxes on this facility nor developed the lake for recreation as originally promised which have been a bone of contention with the local government and residents."

Two complaints of the initiative was what Southern California would do for water. And how would the newly formed state of Jefferson pay for a new government, police, etc. Obviously, Jefferson, specifically, could finance its government, police, etc. from charging high costs for water. Additionally, since the state of Silicon Valley will apparently be the richest state, but they have to import water, then they should have to pay A LOT for it.

One of the complaints of the initiative on Wikipedia was that there were no UC schools in the designated area of Jefferson, completely negating the California State University System and presenting the Jefferson area as having no opportunity for a decent education. When in reality, what is now the apparently forgotten California State University Humboldt and California State University Chico, could become University of Jefferson Humboldt and University of Jefferson Chico, thus finally leveling the playing field for those schools and those students.
http://ballotpedia.org

The proposed state of Central California is forcasted to be the poorest, but this state would control the food supply. Obviously, they could use that to their advantage, working out water with Jefferson and other things to their advantage with other states.

The attitude that no one will vote for this initiative is contradicted by Wikipedia: (Wikipedia:Jefferson (proposed Pacific state) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

"The issue was again raised starting on September 3, 2013, when the Siskiyou County Board of Supervisors voted 4–1 in favor of secession from California to form a proposed state named Jefferson. The proposal was joined by the Modoc County Board of Supervisors (September 24) and Glenn County Board of Supervisors (January 21, 2014).The Jefferson Declaration Committee is reportedly aiming to get 12 counties in support.
Also in late 2013, Silicon Valley venture capitalist Tim Draper introduced a separate proposal called Six Californias, which if approved would divide the state into six new states, including Jefferson in the extreme north. This version of Jefferson comprises 13 California counties: Del Norte, Siskiyou, Modoc, Humboldt, Trinity, Shasta, Lassen, Tehama, Plumas, Mendocino, Glenn, Butte, and Lake; but no territory from Oregon."

Yeah I'm a NorCal native and I'm going to vote against this, and I will again and again and again. It's dumber than the "Justice for Janitors Day" (ACR-155) that was in the state legislature a while ago.

The local news reported briefly on it a few days ago saying that if the State of Jefferson was established, it would be the poorest state in the union. Pretty stupid plan.
