I agree with you.

Warm water is for taking a bath or shower, cold water is for swimming.

Aesthetically speaking California's coastline is much more beautiful.. If not one of the most beautiful in the world..

Not to derail this thread too far off topic but how do you compare it to your native Australia?

well I'm from Sydney, but I think CA coast is different then NSW coast..

California's coast has more depth, is much more ambient & diverse.. If not more exotic..

Sydney & NSW has more beaches and you can actually swim in the water, as the water is rather at a higher temperature and the beachers are easier to swim in then that of California's coast, especially North California..

I'm not gonna compare it to Nrth Quesnslands tropical coast.. As they're not comparable..

To sum it up, California's coast is one I would just sit down, relax and enjoy the terrain, climate, view etc where as Sydney's/NSW coast is one I would swim and have some fun..

From Frommer's pitch:

"idyllic haven of white-sand beaches, condos whose sea-front apartments are available for weekly rentals, excellent restaurants, good shopping."

Slap up some condos and mall along Big Sur, and just maybe it'll be a contender.

lmao ... yes, I was thinking: how great that Florida is getting the thumbs up in this ... perhaps it will serve to steer more folks there rather than here!

California with out a shadow of a doubt! The landscape and coastline is much more beautiful, and the actual places on the coast such as Santa Barbara, San Diego etc are amazing...

And cold water in CA?? Hahaha i'm from England, CA's waters are boiling to me compared to England's 3-6 degrees Celsius water that I regularly dive in!

Pros and cons to both.

Florida
Pros: warm water, near swamps, white sand, coconut trees and palmettos, shells, periwinkle water, still, good for winter and spring break

Cons: storms, sharks, lack of surf, too hot and humid during summer and fall, crowded, surrounded by highrises and very flat and stagnant

Cali
Pros: warm during summer and fall, golden sand, clear water (mostly in Catalina with silvery sand), surf,
dry heat instead of humidity, shells, date palms and fan palm trees, golden sand

Cons: cool water, sharks, too wavy, foggy, bad for swimming in spring and winter, windy sometimes, annoying seagulls

Both are good depends on what to look for. Great Whites in Cali, Tiger Sharks and Bull Sharks (more dangerous than White Sharks) in warmer Florida, thus more shark attacks,, even if most attacks here come from reef sharks.

Cali has pretty killer scenery too, but suffers from crowds. Cali people often vacation in HI or FL for beaches during cool weather, HI often come to Cali for surfing. I would advise HI people to visit FL sometime for the different beaches, and for Floridians to travel to Cali and HI to experience the surf and the majestic scenery. HI will be much warmer water for you Floridians, but Cali is not all that bad.
