Are there any reasonable places to live in California? I'm drawn there because of the lure of tuition free education. Thats pretty much the only real thing i want out of California, at least for now. I've lived in ghettos, im just curious if a person with a highschool education, but a culinary tradesmen can live in an area of california, and actually afford to live. But the cost of rent in some of these places i see are obscene and i mean do you make that much more an hour? You have to have some trades people that live okay? I dunno i guess i would ask, what does a skilled line cook make on avg. in cali (just estimate between ? per hour and ? per hour) and if it is possible to live there where... and also is this a reasonable idea...go to California work live, enjoy a new place, for the sake of tuition free education.

Tuition isn't free in CA but it is more reasonable than many places. The Central Valley is probably the least expensive part of CA and there are several UC campuses in the valley.

I imagine that the line cooks at the French Laundry in Yountville make more than the line cooks at Denny's in Turlock.

Do not worry California has many wealthy people, so it does not effect the state that much. All though the politicians worry me of where the money goes like taxes? The educational system is horrible (Not as horrible as in Arizona though)

But such an expensive state with such crappy public school system.

Socialism = Higher Taxes.

Have to be a resident for a year first. Out of state college fees apply.

Tuition used to be free in the California State Colleges.
So did camping in the state parks.

But that was back when a gallon of gas cost $.30, and an ounce of weed cost $10.

Maybe you aren't a mooch, papaloche, but don't come down on escapecalifornia. Look at your own words. That's how I took it too.

Since tuition isn't free in California, what's wrong with going to college in your own state? Doesn't every state have a low cost community college system?

California is not cheap to live in and I don't believe cooks make a whole lot of money unless they are famous chefs.

California subsidizes it a lot more than other states.

When I started CSU Northridge in 1979, it was about $350 for tuition, $100 for books (and engineering books are expensive) and about $50 for everything else (parking, health fees, etc.)...so about maybe $500 per semester. Pretty cheap for an engineering degree. After I graduated, I got a job with Grumman making the same money (in 1986 we started at around $30K) as a guy sitting next to me with $20K student loans who had graduated from Georgia Tech (admittedly a world class engineering school especially compared to CSUN) but wow, what a cheap education I got.

Here we are studying for our differential equations class.

Where in California are you looking to move? This will help people answer your questions easier. Sacramento is probably your best bet as it is cheapest of the large cities and it has CSUS.

First of all, tuition is only free for residents of California, so you would have to establish residence first-which is a year of living in the state. If you apply to a State College anytime before this the school will assume that you moved to the state specifically to attend college-and will charge you a non-resisdent tuition. You can plead your case, but it is up to the school to decide-and your chances of getting 'in state' are slim to non-existent without establishing residency first.

Second, even if you are a resident you still pay fees-which will amount to just under five grand per year depending on what school you go to-this does not include books, though.

Cooking jobs. Realistically you will start out at under $10 an hour, depending on the restaurant and will probably cap out around $12 an hour unless you are an extremely talented chef in a top restaurant. Cooks will make more in SF or Berkeley/Oakland-maybe starting at $12, but the cost of living in the Bay is so high compare to Sacramento that the extra two or three bucks an hour won't make a difference.
