1. Davis, by a landslide
2. Chico
3. Sacramento

4. Merced--simply because there is a growing UC campus near that small city

5. Fresno--hey, size matters. And it is now the most populous city in the Central Valley.

I wouldn't count Stockton and the rest of San Joaquin County. Having a Democrat-run, very left-leaning city does not necessarily a progressive area make.

But ultimately, my $.02 are really worth $.0002. I'm not even "progressive." These are just my observations.

Sacramento, Davis and Chico are NOT in the San Joaquin Valley.

Sacramento, Davis and Chico are in the SACRAMENTO VALLEY.

Fresno voted against Prop 8 every time it came along and when that whole "support chick-fi-la" thing happened the line was over two miles long literally all day, Fresno is not half as progressive as you think. I have had two gay friends move away because of how bad it is here and a third is strongly considering moving to Washington.

Well it may not be a liberal city, but the OP wanted the most liberal for the SJV. I think Fresno is as good as it gets from what I hear from Central Valley friends.

What I don't get is why someone would pay to live in California and then be a conservative unless they are just from here and don't want to leave family and connections. Arizona is right next door and is much cheaper, newer, and conservatives have voting power.

One of the things that drew me to LA and keeps me here is that my state votes democratic and does crazy liberal things that I love. Living in a solid blue city and state to me is worth the sticker price, plus the weather and amenities. I just think the SJV is the worst of both worlds, you have crazy taxes, old infrastructure, state politics that may not match up with yours, HEAT, lack of ocean access, etc... But maybe there is something I'm missing.
