I'm finalizing my trip to LA in September and I'm pretty set except for where to stay. I'll be without a car for the first three days as I plan on doing tour buses and using the metro. My last two days I'll be renting a car.

My original plan was to stay in Hollywood, but I see the hotel rooms in Downtown are much cheaper for equivalent star level. I would like to be around other tourists but since I'll be using the metro and hop on/hop off buses, what advantage does staying in Hollywood offer over Downtown? I would like to get in some nightlife, but I prefer lounges and upscale bars as opposed to the EDM/Hip Hop Scene like Vegas.

Also any suggestions on hotels? For Hollywood I'm going back and forth between the Moment and Loews, but I plan on being in my hotel mainly to sleep and get dressed to go out.
