If you are considering UCLA, you might not want to live all the way in the LB. If you will go to Cal State Long Beach, you might want to look around the campus area (Pacific Coast Hwy/Bellflower Ave./7th Street intersection) all the way towards the Marina/Seal Beach area. Those are all very nice areas.
Thanks, I will put all those thoughts into consideration. I am looking for something closer to work right now. I think this will be a smarter move. After I get to know the surrouding areas better I will venture out and find my dream place...

I've lived in Long Beach for 12 years, and my husband has been here for about 20. We've lived in Belmont Shore, and now live in Naples. Both are very safe neighborhoods, but the parking is abysmal.

A good rule of thumb is:

*stay east of Cherry St. (east of Redondo would be even better)
*stay south of 7th St.

There are some nice areas immediately west of the Long Beach airport, but there are few rentals there.

Lakewood is safe, but boring, particularly if you are young and/or single. It's mostly families.

Downtown is touch and go. I know people who live there and love it. I think it depends on what kind of lifestyle you want. As a woman I would not be comfortable walking around there after dark, but my husband is not bothered by it.

The area around CSULB is nice. I agree that if you think you might go to UCLA, you don't want to commute from Long Beach.

Torrance has some nice areas, but I don't know much about rental opportunities.
