I grew up in L.A. and by the beach in OC, but now I wonder if there is a small town in California where there is a library, liberal-minded people and not expensive.

Orcutt outside of Santa Maria can be had for little, especially a mobile home. Orcutt has a library, and Santa Maria has everything else. Sample of real estate:

Lompoc is another city to consider. It too has a library.

No, there isn't. Libraries are very expensive, so places with libraries are expensive.

What is your budget? Which area of CA do you prefer?

How much of a library? Small, inexpensive communities abound, and many have pleasant little libraries where you can order books delivered from larger county systems, etc. But, I'm curious, you have internet, right? Or are you using a library computer for this forum? In this age, a computer / internet connection IS the world's largest library.

All said, check any number of small towns. I'll throw one your way: Rio Vista. In the Delta. Delightful, quiet, inexpensive town on the river. 90 minutes to San Francisco. Less than 30 minutes to BART. Little community bus system with limited service to BART towns and Fairfield for shopping, etc. And good fishing, if you enjoy that

Cheese-whiz! Do we get to turn a guy's simple search request into a liberal vs conservative bashing thread? How unique and refreshing! What a great opportunity!

Um, OP, just stick with researching small town libraries and their relationship with their respective county library systems.

As for the Central coast towns, yes, they're great - but they are not inexpensive. You have to go inland to keep costs down. If staying connected to water environments is important, Rio Vista is a great bet and has a little library, as I said. Another cool little town - definitely liberal! - is Guerneville, on the Russian River. Also about 90 minutes or so north of the Bay. And Guerneville also has a little library. And that library is served by the Sonoma County Library system, which is very big and complete. Here's a link:
Guerneville Regional Library | Sonoma County Library
Rio Vista is not particularly liberal, though not overtly conservative in feel either. Guerneville is definitely very liberal. Rio Vista is less expensive than Guerneville. But Guerneville is not expensive either.

One Central coast town that might fit would be Lompoc. Beautiful spot.

Good luck.

in all seriousness, Rio Vista would be a good option. close to the bay area and pretty cheap for bay area standards. plus, it's very moderate as well. and it has a library.

A 3BR home in Lompoc can be had for $225K or more, if you consider that to be inexpensive.
