Diversity is ok just as long as we have one identifying culture and language. Many "immigrants" aren't assimilating today as they once did. When you have massive immigration both legally and illegally from mostly one ethnic group that's not diversity.

So, diversity is ok as long as the "little people" stay in their place, and fervently follow the edicts of the dominant (or most aggressive) segment of the population? This reeks of a gross insecurity which characterizes so many of these pangs for the good ole days. Simpler times. When we didn't have to think much, we all just did as we were told.

Sorry kids, if you want to get rich on global commerce and be the big player in the worldwide capitalism game, you have to accept dealing with people that just might not look and act just like you and your old buddies in your heyday. Time to grow a spine and evolve, because plenty of others have done so, and are winning this game.

Then why are so many of the diverse "races" NOT assimilating as the previous ones did? Individuals are making contributions, but ...... the majority are avoiding diversity in "their" area.

Yes there were Italian,Irish, Swede, etc neighborhoods but not any more. But in CA you have whole areas, and spreading, that do NOT assimilate.

There are legions of Americans that demonstrate the insight and intelligence level of a can of warm Natural Light. Duck Dynasty stuff.
Seeing that example, why in the hell would anybody want to assimilate into that?

How much earlier were there large groups of Italian, Irish, Swede, German, etc. neighborhoods? Not only has it been literally over a century of assimilation, their cultures have more similarities to the English-Dutch origins of the 13 colonies and so could assimilate faster.

On top of that, it was a different era with limited technology so they had no choice. Their neighbors found ways to accept them one way or another (probably economically, to do business) and they reciprocated because it is good business. How long did that process take? How many generations? Notice that their presence had to be accepted to really get the ball rolling.

On the topic of culture and economics, Latinos and Chinese were sidelined for decades if not a good century. They had no choice but to conduct business in their own communities to survive. Yep, the same type of communities that most people think of when they say immigrants are not assimilating. The only difference is in the quantity of them: Welcome to the modern era, a world with 6.5 billion people on it and both instant communication combined with a sophisticated & efficient shipping infrastructure the likes of which had never been seen before. Which by the way, both contribute to bringing about more business opportunity than ever. Businesses bringing pieces of the outside world into the United States proved to be profitable enough to keep up and grow. The free market at work.

By the way, the people descended from those original longtime immigrants eventually integrated fully but I don't see anybody crediting them for integrating. Oh what's that, because they are Americans already? Well if we follow that definition, a desirable group has been selectively taken out of a population under examination, then much to their surprise, the remaining members of that population are full of problems! It's like immigrants are being judged by an army of mother-in-laws.

Also, some folks need to do some thinking to explain the existence of a very large number of children of illegal immigrants who do read, write and speak American English with minimal accents and who strongly prefer American society and pop culture (that they grew up in) over that of Mexico and the rest of Central and South America. They prefer America for no reason other than that America is best? That makes no sense. Why would they choose a country filled with a contingent people who hate them for their parents' legal identities? It's because they have assimilated into the culture, are therefore comfortable in it and identify with being American.

On the one hand some are complaining that immigrants assimilate too slowly. On the other hand, the folks are also willing to ship out immigrants who do assimilate relatively quickly (still the next generation of immigrants).

Basically, it's the latest version of "If they ain't white, they ain't right" syndrome. Thinly veiled, in most cases, but some are rather brazen in their racism and xenophobia, and others clumsily attempt to put lipstick on it or deny the undeniable. But the truth behind the endless rants is always made apparent and rather obvious.

Avoiding the issue.

The immigrants in CA, not home to those in Duck Dynasty, are NOT assimilating. In fact it is so bad the State has to have things printed in TWO languages at least. Why? Non assimilation and spreading. If you went back 100 years ago when lots of Irish, Italians, Swedes, Germans, etc were migrating to the USA, their neighborhoods in a generation (20/30 years) were English speaking. Not in CA. Now the Asian communities are a bit better at it as they speak something besides Chinese, so English becomes the main language for most. The largest group of immigrants are NOT assimilating, they are bringing the culture they fled to CA and keeping their language. That is not assimilation.

Who said anything about hate?

Next the Germans, as an example, or the Swedes, or the Italians, learned the language and changed their culture. Part of the problem is many immigrants here do not want to change as many just come for money to help family at home and will eventually go back, others want to be what they were, just better off and so many come in illegally and hide that they can't assimilate. I don't care what race or nationality, assimilation is a major problem right now. Yes many do as I have friends of all the groups who are ... just like assimilation would produce. BUT CA has a large number, larger as a percentage than any group in the past, that are trying to keep it the same generation after generation.

Let every decent person come but .... why would they NOT assimilate if life here is what they want and not where they came from?

That's not what I meant. Immigrants should assimilate to our language and culture while they can still retain their native ones. I have no idea what you mean by "little people should stay in their place". What place? Legal immigrants and naturalized citizens have all the rights of native citizens and rightly so. What good ole days are you referring to? We have always allowed in legal immigrants and I have no problem with that. Today though we lack diversity in our "immigration" numbers. It doesn't aid in assimilation but colonization instead. Just who has a problem with those who look a different way? I couldn't care less what anyone looks like. You can take your race card and shove it where the sun don't shine.

I didn't realize that this was a game and evolve to what?
