Like many other ex-Californians, I'm in Colorado. However, I did not leave CA because of the high cost of living, but I can understand why so many have fled to other states because of this.
Unfortunately, the area I grew up in is now about 80% Asian. As whites flocked to other places throughout the country, Asians from China, Korea & other countries almost took over entire neighborhoods overnight. It's very sad.
Would I move back to Southern California? Probably not. Real estate prices still need to drop another 40-50 percent. And if that happened, you'd still have many of the current problems such as traffic, overcrowding and earthquakes. I miss the excellent food, mild winters, ocean, Sierra Nevada's, PCH, etc. The scenery is beautiful throughout Central & Northern California and nicer than Colorado, but I'm not about to spend 2 million dollars just to live near it.
At heart, LA is my home and always will be. I love the interesting people in the gritty areas, and I feel most at home in places like Hollywood (off the boulevard) and Los Angeles.

CT. We are set to relocate in June. Lived in CA my whole 42 years, but honestly believe that life can be better on a variety of levels. There are so many things to love about the state where I was born, but as time goes on, it seems the gild is off the lily, so to speak. I live a block off the water in a historical home, tons of friends and family, but the rat race is too much. Maybe I will leave and return, however, just getting a different perspective might prove invigorating. Time will tell.

Well .... the exodus from the coastal areas is growing. But the exodus from the state overall is actually shrinking.
In the 90's about 200,000 more people were leaving the state than moving here. Now it's down to about 100,000 people.
Mostly because about half of those people are choosing to move to cheaper, inland areas of California rather than leaving the state all together.

Whiteville, Tennessee.
I sold my home in San Luis Obispo for 398,000 and came back to the place of my birth. For 49,000 I bought a modular,3 br, 2bath on 14 acres located on a lake that is full of bass. There are a few things I miss. The ocean and the Sierras. But Tennessee isnt exactly ugly either. It is a great place to retire and actually have a little $$$ to do things my wife and I want to do as we get older.

Your numbers are wrong. You say most of the 100,000 people who left coastal California in 2007 moved inland. Not true. Look at the facts. Even the relentlessly liberal LA Times has the facts. In 2007 87,000 more people left California than moved to CA. And they did not move to Riverside. They left the state. The state's population continutes to grow only because of immigration.
Also of interest is the fact that only 5800 jobs were created each month in CA during 2007 compared to 20,000 per month the prior year. Bad omen. Perhaps all those peope who are leaving CA are taking their businesses with them?
Cheerleading for CA is OK by me on this forum. But lets stick to facts.

They say pretty much the same thing about Highlands Ranch in the southern Denver metro. Little California. Here in Colorado I meet more people from California at social things and out and about (the park, kids birthday parties and soccer games, co-workers, etc.) than I ever knew in California. Everyone I met at the park in California was from new yawk, boston, China, the Middle East, India, or some other foreign country. Not from my high school.
I just got back from SoCal today. Yesterday we were in the park in Thousand Oaks. Yep, there was a guy an his wife there with their boston red sox hats on.
It's easier to reconcile being the outsider than the invaded.
