You might want to try driving those routes at times other than three o'clock in the morning.

No, this was at 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. (I had to be in Irvine at 1:00 p.m. and left SLO early to avoid traffic, which was a waste because there was none.)
Sorry to disappoint you though!

Edited to add: The number of cars I noted was located between the 405 interchange and the exit to the 210 on the 118. I did not mean to imply that I saw just 25 cars on the entire length of the 118. Sorry for any confusion. Nonetheless, the low number of cars between those 2 normally crowded points was, to me, amazing.

Well, there is one thing that is for sure about Calif. Many people are leaving. But Many 'more' are coming in. Bottom line: The population is growing! The last I heard the growth rate was ~ 1 million new inhabitants per year 'net.' And where do most of these new people go? The major cities such as LA, SF, OC, SD.
So if there is some new startling information that California's population has somehow started 'shrinking' all of a sudden please show me the numbers. I would be very interested to see those stats.

I don't understand the traffic report. California's population continues to grow in spite of the middle class leaving the state. They are being replaced by illegals, legal immigrants and the children of both. How can the freeways be less crowded? They were built to handle 15 million people where 38 million now live. I don't see any decrease in traffic. The 118 and 210 west of Pasadena have always had lighter traffic. The only days SoCal is remotely drivable is near hoildays when schools and colleges are out of session and government workers are staying home. The other good time was when we had the "Day without a Mexican". San Diego freeways were a dream that day.

We relocated to Howard County, MD (Baltimore) for a little over a year and then landed in Douglas County, CO (Denver). We're not sure yet whether we're staying here long-term. It's a big, beautiful country!

We left CA in '90 for the Black Hills of South Dakota to raise our children in a better environment, then moved to CO in '97. We are now empty nesters and thinking of moving back to CA because we miss the beach...and yes, every vacation is at the beach or on a boat. It will either be CA or NV.

That's usually great driving time, at least in my experience because rush hour is usually over ... it's not typical traffic and doesn't mean there are less people in general. It just means there's more people at work and off the roads at that particular time.
As far as people leaving ... maybe that will continue but, all bets are off now.
Housing prices are falling so fast and housing is going to get so much more affordable that ... a lot of people will probably stay and, even, move here again.

Florida here. California is a beautiful state, but I'll stay in Florida. I love it here.
